Marian Has Strong Showing at Midwest Classic; Norwood and Benjamin Hit Standards and Break School Records

Marion, Ind. – The Marian women's track and field team had a strong showing at the IWU Midwest Classic on Saturday afternoon as three NAIA standards were met and Arriana Benjamin and Jai-Lyn Norwood each broke their own school records. 

Giorgia Mameli led the way for the sprint squad with a second-place finish in the 60m after running a 7.75. Makayla Melvin finished in fourth with a time of 7.89, while DeJae Hudson also took sixth in the 60m hurdles after clocking in at 9.47. The 200m saw Mameli finishing second in a time of 25.91, while Melvin came in fifth at a time of 26.80. Holli Reuter placed 24th, Shirmara Anderson in 31st, Kylee Lewellen in 34th, and Sarah Strodtbeck in 38th.

Hanna Reuter took the title in the 400m after clocking a time of 59.80, with Taylor Thomas taking second in 600m with a time of 1:39.28 and Lewellen finishing in 10th with a time of 1:48.08. Nora Steele paced Marian in the 800m with a time of 2:24.26 to finish fourth and Katie Woods was right behind her in fifth with a time of 2:29.69.

In the mile, Luci Woodrum finished eighth in a time of 5:38.60, while Emma Beimfohr placed 28th in a time of 6:12.07. Liz Loichinger led the charge in the 1000m with a seventh-place finish after crossing the line in 3:08.20. Sabrina Siems was next in 17th with a time of 3:21.74, while Woodrum finished in a time of 3:21.87 to finish 18th. Ali Ray and Mari Hudson competed in the 5000m, with Ray taking second (18:37.21) and Hudson in 13th (21:30.86).

The 4x400m relay A team of Taylor ThomasHanna ReuterJai-Lyn Norwood, and Giorgia Mameli won with a B standard time of 4:00.31, while the B team of Liz LoichingerNora SteeleKylee Lewellen, and Katie Woods placed fourth in a time of 4:21.56.

The Marian jumpers were led by Norwood as she broke her own school record and improved her A standard with a jump of 11.85m to finish first. Naomi Walters placed third after jumping a B standard of 11.18m, while Shirmara Anderson jumped 11.00m to finish fourth. Hanna Reuter and Holli Reuter finished in ninth and 11th, respectively. Hudson finished in third with a 5.00m jump to lead Marian in the long jump. Walters jumped 4.86m to finish eighth, and Holli Reuter finished in ninth with a leap of4.68m. Anderson cleared 1.49m to take sixth in the high jump.

Arriana Benjamin highlighted the Marian throwers as she finished first in the weight throw, throwing an A standard and new school record of 17.31m. Keeley Hughes finished second with a throw of 15.42m, while Nhaydia Watson finished 16th with a throw of 12.81m and Allie Miller threw 12.10 to place 24th.

In the shot put, Benjamin did her thing again as she finished second with a B standard throw of 13.22m. Landry Munoz threw 10.21m for 19th, while Watson finished 23rd with a 9.80m throw. Miller and Hughes rounded out shot put after finishing in 27th and 29th.
