Marian University became the operator of the Lake Sullivan Sports Complex in 2011 as the result of a unique public-private management partnership with the City of Indianapolis Parks Department. Marian is leading the effort to begin a new era for this historic venue that is the home of the Major Taylor Velodrome, originally built in the 1980’s as a host venue for the 1987 Pan American Games.Â
Now known as the Indy Cycloplex, the park is a 42-acre greenspace and home to a collection of first-class facilities in multiple cycling disciplines: the Major Taylor Velodrome, a newly-renovated BMX track, a dynamic cyclocross course, and mountain bike trails including a dual slalom course. The Cycloplex is home to competitions, clinics, and other events in all five cycling disciplines, as well as a variety of community events throughout the year.Â
The park also serves as the ‘home turf’ of the Marian University varsity cycling team, consistently one of the top collegiate cycling programs in the country, owning 46 USA Cycling collegiate national team championships in four disciplines and many individual and team event national titles.
The Indy Cycloplex is a destination for regular regional and national caliber cycling competitions and events and acts as a local hub for recreational cycling. In addition to nationally-recognized events such as USA Cycling National Championships on the track and the Major Taylor Cross Cup, the park is home to daily programming in each disciplines and other events.Â
The park is easily accessible by bike and connects to downtown and other neighborhoods via via off-street bike paths and trails or on-street bike lanes. The Cycloplex is also part of the Riverside Regional Park and home to unique recreational opportunities as a part of that comprehensive development to promote public green space and recreation.
