Lima, Ohio - The Marian men's tennis team ended their 2022-23 season on Saturday afternoon, as the Knights were swept 7-0 by UNOH. The loss to the fourth ranked Racers drops the Knights to 16-11 as they end the season on a three-match losing streak.
The Racers breezed through doubles play against Marian, winning each of the three matches to take the opening point of the afternoon.
Shadi Al Tori and Andy Ilett fell to Martin Stanchev and Malik Omarkhanov at No. 1 doubles by a 6-2 score, and at No. 3 doubles
Jake Giles and
Jona Henze were defeated 6-3. Sergio Conde and Giovanni Branchetti defeated the Knights duo of
Mark Griffin and
Jones McNamar at No. 2 doubles by a 6-3 score.Â
In singles, Marian was unable to win a set as they fell in each of the 12 sets. Griffin lost at No. 1 singles against Stanchev 6-1, 6-1, and Ilett fell at No. 3 to Omarkhanov 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2
Dmitrii Voshchenkov was bested by Branchetti 6-1, 6-2, and at No. 5 Henze suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss in his final match as a freshman. McNamar was defeated by Mike Stieler at No. 4 as he put up Marian's best fight on the afternoon, losing by 6-4, 6-2 set scores. At No. 6 singles, Nils Messin defeated Al Tori 6-2, 6-2, ending the match with the Racers' 7-0 victory.
Marian ends the year receiving votes in the NAIA National rankings, posting a 16-11 overall mark. Marian went 10-7 in the spring portion of their schedule, after going 6-4 in the fall during Crossroads League play.
