Corbin, Ky. - The Marian wrestling team will enter the new year on a high note, finishing the 2024 portion of their schedule with a third place finish at the University of the Cumberlands Battle in the Bluegrass. The Knights had nine of their 12 wrestlers place in the tournament, with Anthony Hughes and Clay Guenin each winning their respective weight classes. 

Nine Knights placed in the tournament, with Anthony Hughes (125) and Clay Guenin (197) stealing the show with wins in their respective weights. Elliott Rodgers finished third as the next top-finishing Knight, and Marlin Williams and Braden Getz each finished fourth. On the day Marian scored 138.5 points, tying No. 5 University of the Cumberlands in the tournament. No. 1 Life University won the event with 227.5 points, and No. 7 Indiana Tech finished second with 168 points. The Knights defeated four ranked or receiving votes programs on the day. 

#7 Anthony Hughes (125) - Champion in the 125 weight class, going 4-0 on the day. Recorded two wins by fall and a major decision to reach the championship, where he defeated WHAC rival #15 Allen Calderon of Indiana Tech. Hughes won the championship match 4-1 by decision, sealing the win with a takedown in the final period to win the weight class.

Landon Bertsch (133) - Landon Bertsch finished the tournament in sixth place, going 2-3 overall. Scored both wins by tech fall in the consolation side of the bracket.

Clay Guenin (197) - The freshman earned a championship at the 197 bracket, going 3-0 on the day. Guenin won his first two matches by fall, then in the championship match landed an upset 4-3 win over No. 15 Greyson Stevens from Cumberlands. Guenin led 4-0 in the match entering the final period of the championship, allowing three points on a penalty and reversal in the third period.
