Mishawaka, Ind. - The Marian women's tennis team ended their Crossroads League regular season on a sour note Thursday afternoon, falling to Bethel University by a 4-3 score. Bethel's win gives the Pilots the CL Regular Season Championship, as Marian ends the regular season as the runner-up with a 7-1 record.
Bethel landed the first point of the match, winning the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3.
Yasmin Imamniyazova and
Ana Barbosa Fernandez earned Marian's lone win in doubles as they finished their match first, defeating Ariaden Kokoula and Farida El Sayed at No. 2 doubles by a 6-1 score.
Liliane Alinquant and Paloma Caceres were not as fortunate at No. 3 doubles, as they fell 6-2 against Sandy Sharaf and Kenzie Abdelaal. Needing a win at No. 1 to claim the first point of the day, Michelle Iriogyen and
Joelle Leihbacher came up short, falling 6-4 against Kaavya Palani and Szilvi Ferenczy.
Trailing 1-0, Marian fell into a further hole as Fernandez fell 6-2, 6-0 against Abdelaal at No. 3 singles, while Alinquant lost against Ferenczy by a 6-3, 6-0 score on the No. 4 singles court. Marian landed their first point of the match at No. 2 singles, as
Michelle Irigoyen scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Palani to make the match score 3-1. Despite the win, Marian was unable to stay in the match, as Leihbacher fell 6-2, 6-4 against Sharaf at No. 5, clinching the match for the Pilots.
Despite seeing the match go to Bethel, the Knights finished strong, getting wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles. Imamniyazova won 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (4) at No. 1 singles against Kokoula, while Caceres won 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3) at No. 6 against El Sayed.Â
Marian will await their opponent for the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals, which will be played at the Marian Tennis Courts on Tuesday, October 1. An announcement on the Knights' matchup will be made when the rest of the league concludes their schedule.
