Elliott Rodgers' 157 Championship Headlines Marian Wrestling's Runner-Up Finish at WHAC Meet

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Marian wrestling team placed second on Saturday at the annual WHAC Championships, as senior-leader Elliott Rodgers highlighted Marian's efforts in the championship by winning the 157 weight class. The championship for Rodgers is his fourth career conference title, and headlined six All-WHAC Team honors. 

Elliott Rodgers was victorious at 157, posting a 3-0 record as he held off Elijah Chacon (Indiana Tech) 7-5 in the championship match. The win for the senior secured him First Team All-WHAC honors, as he was the lone Knight to make the first team. Landon Bertsch, Marlin Williams, Braden Getz, Jordan Fulks, and Clay Guenin each made Second Team All-WHAC, as each finished as the runner-up in their respective weight classes. 

Marian scored a total of 145.5 points at the WHAC Championship, placing second behind Indiana Tech, who won the event with a 193.5 team score. Cornerstone finished third place overall, 15.5 points behind the Knights, while Lourdes and Rochester Christian completed the top-five. Siena Heights would finish sixth, and Cleary finished seventh. 

Below are full results for Marian's 12 wrestlers at the championship on Saturday. All-Academic awards and special honors from the championship will be announced on Monday afternoon. The NAIA Qualifier release will be announced on Tuesday, February 25, with the brackets to be announced on Friday, February 28. 

Anthony Hughes (125)
  • Earned a major decision win by an 11-3 score against Jeffrey Bailey in his first match of the tournament
  • Suffered a defeat against Allen Calderon of Indiana Tech in the semifinals, as Calderon won by a 5-3 decision
  • Hughes placed third, defeating Cornerstone's Bailey for a second time in the third place match. The match result went by way of a 5-2 decision.
  • Finished 2-1 overall
Landon Bertsch (133)
  • Dominated his opening match of the championship against Jake Lyn of Cleary, winning by a 16-1 tech fall
  • Earned a 2-1 win over Devan Johnson of Cornerstone in the semfinals to reach the championship
  • Finished second against Luke Rioux of Indiana Tech, as Rioux, the league Newcomer of the Year, won by a 6-2 decision
  • Bertsch earned Second Team All-WHAC and finished 2-1 overall
Brady Ison (141)
  • Earned a win by fall over Dru Mason of Lourdes in his first match, securing the second period pin
  • Fell by fall against Ian Boden of Cornerstone in the quarterfinals
  • In the consolation bracket, defeated Isaac Kuhn of Cornerstone by fall. 
  • Earned third win by fall over Maurice Ames of Siena Heights
  • Dropped to the fifth place match as Randy Frailey of Siena Heights pinned the 141 wrestler
  • Forfeited in the fifth place match against Mason, finishing sixth
  • Finished 3-3 on the day
Marlin Williams (149)
  • Began his day with a 9-3 victory over Jon Huggler of Cornerstone in the quarterfinals
  • Defeated Adam Polk of Rochester Christian by fall in the second period to reach the championship match
  • Louden Stradling of Cleary defeated the freshman by fall in the championship match, winning 7-6 by decision
  • Williams earned Second Team All-WHAC and finished 2-1 overall
Zach Wilson (149)
  • Lost in his first match of the day in the quarterfinals against Louden Stradling, falling by tech fall
  • Pinned Shamique Bryant of Siena Heights in 52 seconds to earn a win in the consolation bracket
  • Like his teammate Williams, defeated Adam Polk of Rochester Christian, doing so by fall
  • Lost in the third place match against Indiana Tech's Mike Loney, losing by tech fall
  • Finished fourth place overall with a 2-2 record
Elliott Rodgers (157)
  • Began his championship run with a first period win by fall over Rochester Christian's Nate Young
  • Earned a 12-3 major decision win in the semifinals over Vinnie Abbey of Indiana Tech
  • In the championship match against Elijah Chacon, the Knights' senior won by a 7-5 decision, landing a takedown with 1:08 remaining in the match to win
    • Rodgers scored five of his seven points in the third period to secure the win
  • Earned First Team All-WHAC and finished with a 3-0 mark
Jeff Dunasky Jr (157)
  • Started the tournament with a thrilling sudden victory against Thade Radosa of Cornerstone
  • Lost in the semifinal match against Chacon, losing by tech fall
  • Defeated Nate Young of RCU in the consolation bracket by a 13-3 major decision
  • Lost in the third place match to Radosa in the rematch, falling in an 11-4 decision
  • Completed the tournament with a 2-2 record
Braden Getz (165)
  • Opened the day with a win by fall over Defiance's Brian Swinehart in the quarterfinal round
  • Defeated Cooper Mansfield of Cornerstone 4-0 in the semifinals to reach his first championship match
  • Started strong against Indiana Tech's Jonathan Kervin in the championship, but was out-scored 4-0 in the third period as he lost 12-11 in the championship match
  • Getz earned Second Team All-WHAC and finished 2-1 overall
Jordan Fulks (184)
  • Received a bye into the semifinals
  • Defeated Trevor Stuyvenberg of Indiana Tech 8-4 in the semifinals to reach the championship match
  • Was defeated by reigning champion William Speight in the championship match, losing by tech fall
  • Fulks earned Second Team All-WHAC and finished 1-1 on the day
Clay Guenin (197)
  • Received a bye into the semifinals
  • Defeated Brandon Rau of Siena Heights by fall in the first period to reach the championship match
  • Was defeated by Carter Krull of Lourdes in the championship match, losing by fall with 30 seconds remaining in the match.
  • Guenin earned Second Team All-WHAC and finished 1-1 on the day
Michael Yerian (285)
  • Earned a bye to reach the quarterfinals
  • Defeated Brayden Erb of Indiana Tech 4-2 in the quarterfinal round
  • Lost in the semifinals to Aidan Mozden of Siena Heights by a 7-5 decision
  • Won in the consolation round against Tunde Oroye of Cleary by sudden victory
  • Lost in the rematch against Erb in the third place match, with the Warrior winning by major decision
  • Finished 2-2 overall
Kaleb Abad (285)
  • Lost against Johnny Cruz in his first matchup by way of a third period fall
  • Fell in the consolation round against Oroye of Cleary by a major decision
  • Finished 0-2 in his first WHAC Championship
