Marion, Ind. - For the first time in program history, the Marian women's tennis team was crowned the Crossroads League Tournament Champions after their 4-1 win over Goshen Friday morning. The Knights move to 16-6 overall on the season and automatically get a bid to the NAIA National Championships in Mobile, Alabama.
Michelle Irigoyen and
Jimena Rivera Flores opened up doubles play with their quick 6-0 win at No. 2 to put Marian in the lead.
Liliane Alinquant and
Ana Barbosa Fernandez clinched the point for the Knights with a 6-1 win at No. 3.
Yasmin Imamniyazova and
Ana Lopez Torres went unfinished at No. 1 with the 5-3 lead over the Maple Leafs.
After recording the doubles point, Lopez Torres was able to extend the Knights' lead with a pair of 6-2 wins at court No. 2. Goshen was able to knock down Marian's lead to one with their pair of 6-2 wins over Barbosa Fernandez at No. 4.
Paloma Caceres Villalba was quick to counter with a 6-2 and 6-4 win at No. 6 to bring Marian's lead back up to two. Imamniyazova clinched the win for the Knights with her tough-fought 6-1, 3-6, and 6-2 battle at No. 1. Irigoyen (6-0, 4-6, 5-1) and Alinquant (4-6, 6-4) went unfinished in their singles matches.
Marian will find out their opponents for the first round of the National Tournament on April 28th at 12 pm ET during the selection show premiering on the NAIA YouTube channel.
