At Marian University, our vision is to provide an education that profoundly transforms lives, society, and the world.

Our mission is to be a Catholic university dedicated to excellent teaching and learning in the Franciscan and liberal arts traditions. We welcome students of all faiths who seek an educational experience framed within the context of our Franciscan values of dignity of the individual, peace and justice, reconciliation, and responsible stewardship. Our understanding of these values is informed by reflection on the life of Jesus Christ and prayer.

The institution grew out of the dedication and vision of Sister Theresa Hackelmeier and the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, who established a school in Oldenburg, Indiana, in 1851. The college was founded in Oldenburg in 1936 and moved to Indianapolis in 1937. On July 1, 2009, Marian College became Marian University. On October 19, 2012 the university celebrated its 75th anniversary in Indianapolis.

Daniel J. Elsener became the eighth president of Marian College, now Marian University, on August 1, 2001. President Elsener has dedicated his professional life to the mission of Catholic education. As a result of his energetic and visionary leadership the university has experienced great success recruiting students and raising money to advance the mission of the university.

The Marian University department of athletics prides itself on the academic success of its teams and its student-athletes.


Since 2006-07, the Marian University department of athletics has had over 125teams (through 2022-23) represent MU as NAIA Scholar Teams. This award is given to teams that have maintained a 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale for the entire academic year. Each team's head coach sets this award as a goal each season.

Since 1982-83, the Marian University department of athletics has seen nearly 900 of its student-athletes recognized as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. This award is given to a student-athlete who has (1) achieved junior academic standing, (2) has maintained a 3.50 cumulative GPA on a 4.00 scale and (3) has been nominated by the institution's head coach and sports information director. 

Academics and athletics go hand-in-hand at Marian University, which has helped lead to Marian's five NAIA National Championships, 47 USA Collegiate Cycling National Championships, 10 NAIA Track National Champions, and multiple cycling national champions.
