Smith's Goal Lifts Marian to Shut Out at Goshen

Box Score

Goshen, Ind. - One goal was all that was needed to earn a road Crossroads League victory on Saturday night, as Jacelyn Smith's 47th minute goal lifted Marian to a 1-0 win at Goshen. The Knights improved to 13-2-1 overall this season following the win, while moving to 5-1-1 in Crossroads League play.

Marian had ample opportunities to score in the first half, taking 10 shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Erin Oleksak took the game's first attempt with a strike in the fifth minute, but saw her shot reach the keeper Victoria Naylor. Maya Decker and Oleksak kept the pressure on the Maple Leafs over the next 10 minutes as they looked to push ahead by a goal, but the looks were either denied or off frame. In the 34th minute Marian had a strong look on goal with a shot coming off the foot of Delaney Taylor, but her attempt met the post and clanged away from the goal.

Goshen would take just one shot in the first half as the game remained scoreless at halftime, with Noelle Rolfsen snagging a Madelyne Swallow shot just three seconds before the half expired. Marian led in shot attempts in the first half 10-1.

The Knights needed just 80 seconds to score the first goal of the match in the second half, as a Goshen yellow card brought the game to a hault. The card set up a free kick for Marian from the left side, and on the kick Jacelyn Smith blasted the ball into the goal giving Marian the lead. Smith's 47th minute goal would be all Marian would need to secure a win, as the defense limited Goshen to just two shots for the remainder of the game.

Rolfsen was challenged one final time in the 87th minute, save a kick from Lusia Souza to keep the sheet clean and anchor Marian's shut out victory.

For the game, Rolfsen saw three shots come near the net, making the save on both looks that were on frame. Oleksak led Marian in shots with eight taking three on goal, while Smith took two shots scoring on her only look on goal. Ryli JohnIsabelle StanfieldGretchen Mallin, and Taylor each took one of Marian's 19 total attempts as a team.

With the win Marian stays in the No. 3 spot in the Crossroads League standings, two points out of second place. The Knights will return home for their final two matches of the regular season, hosting Taylor on October 27 for a 7 PM match.
