Oleksak Scores Game-Winner as Marian Bests Taylor in Overtime

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian women's soccer team needed a few minutes of overtime, but junior Erin Oleksak scored the golden goal to lead the Knights past Crossroads League-foe Taylor on Wednesday night at St. Vincent Field. The win is the Knights' sixth-straight victory. Marian is now 14-2-1 on the season and 6-1-1 in Crossroads League play.

The Knights began the night attacking Taylor aggressively in the first half, firing off five shots in the opening 15 minutes of play. Trojans goalkeeper Hannah Brackenbury made save after save to keep Marian off the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes. The best opportunity Marian had to score came in the final minute of first half play when Brackenbury earned a yellow card. Jacelyn Smith took the free kick from just outside of the box, and her shot hit the left post. Despite the Knights outshooting the Trojans 11-1 in the opening half, the game remained scoreless.

Marian remained on the attack to begin the second half, with shots by Smith, Delaney Taylor, and Sydney Genatempo giving Taylor some trouble in the first few minutes of action. The Trojans did get some looks later in the second half, but Knights goalkeeper Noelle Rolfsen made a few nice saves to keep things tied. Oleksak had a couple of close looks in the 79th minute, but her attempts were thwarted by Taylor defenders. After two full periods, the game remained scoreless as the teams prepared for overtime.

It did not take long for the Knights to end Taylor's chances on an upset tie or win. Gretchen Mallin dribbled past a few Taylor defenders and delivered a great ball to Oleksak in the box. Oleksak's strike found the top right corner of the net in the 93rd minute, giving Marian a 1-0 victory.

Rolfsen earned a clean sheet, making five saves in the contest. Oleksak finished with nine of Marian's 23 shots on the night to lead the team. Smith finished with four shots as Ryli John, Miranda Nosko, Allie Schlom, and Taylor each had two shots, respectively.

Marian will finish up the regular season at St. Vincent Field on October 30 as they host No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan for a 2 PM contest.
