Box Score NDIANAPOLIS – The Marian women's soccer team ended the regular season with a tough loss on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan in a 2-1 overtime loss. The Knights will head into postseason play with a 14-3-1 record and a 6-2-1 mark in Crossroads League play.
Marian began the afternoon with an advantage, taking a 1-0 lead with 21 minutes left in the opening half. Allie Schlom found the back of the net after a nice pass from Erin Oleksak which deflected off of the Indiana Wesleyan goalkeeper. The Knights also had a great look a few minutes before, but Oleksak's run towards the goal was thwarted by a tackle by the Wildcats. Indiana Wesleyan took a few shots to end the first half, but Marian goalkeeper Noelle Rolfsen kept things a 1-0 entering halftime.
The second half turned into a physical, evenly-matched contest. The Wildcats game through to tie the game up at 1-1 with Sydney Brown scoring a goal. Several Wildcat corner kicks were successfully defended by Marian, but not without some yellow cards being awarded. Gretchen Mallin picked up a yellow card after a foul in the 52nd minute, and Jacelyn Smith also received a caution in the 73rd minute. Indiana Wesleyan's Clois Jones also received a yellow card. The Knights continued to wear down Indiana Wesleyan as the half went along, with three shots in the final 10 minutes. However, Oleksak's shot in the 89th minute was the last scoring chance for both squads before overtime.
Marian took the attack in overtime, with Oleksak taking several shots in the opening minute. She just missed what would have been another game-winning goal after her shot went just left of the post in the 93rd minute. Indiana Wesleyan countered and scored after a corner kick, which was headed by Lauren Turner to Brown for the strike.
Both teams finished with an even 11 shots in the contest, but the Wildcats had seven on goal to Marian's three. Rolfsen made five saves in the loss. Marian yielded five corner kicks and took four. Oleksak led the Knights with four shots, while Smith had three and Delaney Taylor took two.
The Marian women's soccer team will be back at St. Vincent Field, hosting the Crossroads League Tournament quarterfinals on November 6.
