Marian Advances in Crossroads League Tournament With 5-0 Result Over Bethel

INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian women's soccer team got back into the win column on Saturday afternoon, opening the Crossroads League Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Bethel in the quarterfinal round. Marian received a pair of two goal games from Allie Schlom and Erin Oleksak each scoring twice, to improve Marian to 15-3-1 overall this season. 

Marian began the match with an early offensive assult, peppering the Pilots net with four shot attempts in the first 16 minutes. Erin Oleksak took three of the attempts including the game's first look on goal, and kept attacking with a shot on frame in the 22nd minute. The Knights kept their play on the offensive end of the pitch, and in the 29th minute broke loose, as Allie Schlom played a long pass ahead for Oleksak, who beat her defender and scored the game's first goal. 

With the 1-0 lead at hand, Marian continued to press and was close to doubling their lead in the 35th minute as Lindsey Stoughton headed down a corner toward the center of the goal, but Corryn Berlin made the save. In the 40th minute Bethel found a line and managed their first shot attempt of the game as Jessica Wilker booted one toward Noelle Rolfsen, but the keeper made the save. Marian responded with a breakaway as Miranda Nosko had an open look to double the lead, but she clanged the strike off the bottom of the crossbar only to watch the ball carrom away. 

Marian gave one final push in the 43rd minute, and got their second goal of the day from Schlom, as she tapped one in off her heel to put Marian on top 2-0 entering halftime. Maya Decker picked up the assist on the goal, playing the ball to the striker from the left sideline.

The Knights again came out aggressive in the second half picking up two shots and a corner in the half's first 15 minutes, continuing to own possession. In the 65th minute Marian tacked on their third goal of the game, this time seeing Oleksak record the assist as she found Schlom for an easy scoring chance, making it a 3-0 game. Ryli John and Oleksak put the final two goals on the board, scoring 57 seconds in between one another to add to the 5-0 result. John scored off a corner with Delaney Taylor and Sydney Genatempo earning the assist, while Kinadee White assisted on the Oleksak score.

Schlom led Marian in points in the win with two goals and one assist, picking up goals 10 and 11 on the year while adding her 12th assist. Oleksak scored her 20th and 21st goals of the season, leading the team with six shot attempts. John scored on her only shot of the game. In goal Rolfsen earned the win making one save, and in the final 15 minutes Kristen Morgan made a save in her limited action. 

Marian will play either Indiana Wesleyan in the Crossroads League Semifinals on Wednesday. Kickoff from Marion against No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan comes at 7 PM.
