INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian women's soccer team improved to their dominating season Wednesday afternoon as the Knights defeated Jamestown (N.D.) 5-0 at St. Vincent Field. The Knights improve to 17-1-0 on the combined season and have not allowed a goal in each of the last four games.
The Knights put the pressure on early, not allowing Jamestown to get runs on the offensive end and pushing the ball to the Jimmies' defense line. Marian struck for its first goal of the day at the 18-minute mark as Jacelyn Smith put the ball in the back of the net giving the Knights an early first-half lead.
Marian kept up the pressure squeezing off four more shots in the next 20 minutes. The good looks would continue throughout the half and would finally materialize into goals. In the 39th minute, Erin Oleksak crossed the ball across the net as Brittney Zendejas received the pass and sent the ball into the net for an easy goal.
The Zendejas goal put the Knights ahead 2-0 heading into the halftime break. In the first half, the Knights fired off eight shots while preventing a single Jamestown shot.
The Knights came out of the locker room with even more energy on both ends. Just 11 minutes into the half, Marian struck for another goal to further the lead. Oleksak scored her 16th goal of the season after weaving through the Jimmies defenders.
The momentum continued for the Knights. Marian rattled off more shots while keeping threats minimal from the Jamestown offense. In the 73rd minute, Siera Stuart sent in a perfect ball from a corner kick as Zendjeas once again executed the pass and put the header past the keeper for another Marian goal.
The Knights did not let up through the end of the game. With just 54 seconds remaining, Naomi Walters sprinted into the box and was ready to fire off another shot but was then taken down from behind to draw a penalty kick.
Ryli John took advantage of the penalty kick and struck the ball to the back of the net giving the Knights their 5-0 win.
Zendejas finished the day with two goals marking a personal-best for her four-year career at Marian.
Marian out-shot the Jimmies 19-1 in the game while landing nine on goal. The Knights also took six corner kicks while not allowing one from Jamestown.
The Knights look to continue their impressive spring Friday afternoon as host No. 22 Missouri Valley College at 1 p.m.
