Oleksak Breaks Marian's Career Goals Record in 3-0 Win Over Olivet Nazarene

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS - Backed by three different goal scorers, the Marian women's soccer team notched their fifth straight win Monday night as they shutout Olivet Nazarene 3-0. One of the Knights' scorers was junior Erin Oleksak, who scored on a penalty kick in the 74th minute to break a tie with 2021 graduate Chloe Ulmer to become Marian's all-time leading goal scorer as she pushed across her 47th goal on a penalty kick.

Coming off of a five-goal game, the Knights offense kept their red-hot attack going as they fired three shots in the first 10 minutes of the match to test Olivet's keeper Tessa Kowalski. Two of the three shots were on frame, and the aggressive approach soon landed Marian a goal in the 13th minute of the match with Madison Deckard putting away her eighth goal of the season. Deckard collected the ball after a crossing pass from Allie Schlom off the far side of the pitch, setting up the sophomore striker to give the Knights an early lead.

The Knights continued their attack after the goal picking up three corner kicks in a two minute stretch, while getting four shots including two from Erin Oleksak, but Kowalski made a pair of saves for the Tigers to hold the one-goal margin. Olivet turned the action into their attacking half of the field over the final 15 minutes of the first half scratching out four shot attempts, but Noelle Rolfsen helped keep the clean sheet with a save while her back line blocked two shots. Marian entered the half with a 1-0 lead, holding an 8-6 advantage in shot attempts.

Possession changed back and forth to start the second half, with Oleksak missing a goal after hitting the crossbar in the 47th minute, while a Teagon Albert shot just three minutes later was denied by Rolfsen. Marian went back on the offensive with a pair of shots with Isabelle Stanfield and Madison Hill each taking one on goal, however Kowalski stayed tough in net to hold the lead. The tone of the game for Marian quickly changed to a defensive approach in the 56th minute, as the Tigers gained momentum on offense, attacking the net. Rolfsen continued to play big for her team making a pair of saves, while the defense helped clear a pair of corner kicks.

Looking for separation on the scoreboard with an insurance goal, Erin Oleksak delivered for her team in the 74 minute getting loose on a fast break, attacking the net before being taken down while attacking from the left side of the box. The hard foul prompted a red card to Annabel Murley, and Oleksak was awarded with a penalty kick, which she calmly struck into the back of the net to give Marian a 2-0 lead. Oleksak's goal was the 47th of her career, breaking the tie between the junior and Chloe Ulmer for the career record.

Just 39 seconds after the penalty kick, the Knights found the back of the net again putting the game away with 15:49 left in the match. Schlom and Ryli John executed a perfect give and go, with Schlom finding John in front of the goal before getting the ball right back, sneaking a shot inside the left post to give the Knights their 3-0 lead. Rolfsen made two saves in the final five minutes as the Knights withstood a late charge from the Tigers, sealing their fifth straight win.

Marian took 16 shots as a team in the win, with Oleksak taking a team-high four on the night, including her record-setting goal. Deckard's goal was the game-winner as she extended her team-leading total to eight, while Schlom had one assist and one goal. In net, Rolfsen made a season-high six saves as she improved to 4-1 as the starting keeper.

Carrying a 5-1 record the Knights will finish their week on Wednesday afternoon in St. Louis, Mo., where they will take on No. 7 Central Methodist. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 PM ET from O'Fallon Park, with the developmental team match to follow.
