Stanfield's Header Leads No. 7 Marian to Victory Over No. 8 Central Methodist

Box Score

St. Louis, Mo. - The Marian women's soccer team scored one goal early and another late Wendesday afternoon en route to a 2-1 victory against No. 8 Central Methodist. Marian is now 6-1 overall this season in their non-conference slate, winning their sixth consecutive match.

Shots were hard to come by for Marian Wednesday afternoon, as their red-hot offense was held in check taking just two attempts in each period. Erin Oleksak took the first look on frame for Marian just 38 seconds into the match, but the ball was booted directly at Alexis Garlock who made the save. Central Methodist turned right around and took a charge on offense, picking up three corner kicks while taking two shots. After a shot from Andrea Villar missed high, the Knights quickly charged down the field, with Oleksak setting up Madison Hill for her first goal of the season, giving Marian a 1-0 lead 8:22 into the match.

Central Methodist controlled possession for the remainder of the half, denying Marian a shot for the final 36 minutes as their offense began to attack again, challenging Noelle Rolfsen. The senior keeper made a pair of saves as the Eagles mustered five attacks, getting help from her defense in the 18th minute to block a shot from Marcella Helena. Rolfsen's strong play helped Marian hold a 1-0 lead at halftime, with the Eagles leading 7-2 in shot attempts.

The second half began similarly to how the first ended, with Central Methodist dominating possession to start the half, with Helena and Villar each taking a shot on goal in the first five minutes, only to be denied by Rolfsen. The Eagles kept on the attack recording three corner kicks over a span of 10 minutes, and in the 67th minute the persistance paid off with Roneisha Frank netting a goal off the assist from Ktti Torok to tie the match.

Following a defensive struggle that saw just one shot attempt in 16 minutes, Marian was able to generate their offense in the 83rd minute, as the Knights were rewarded with their only corner kick of the afternoon. Delaney Taylor took the corner for Marian, and hit a perfect ball to Isabelle Stanfield, who was able to head the ball in goal for the go-ahead score. Stanfield's goal with 7:33 remaining gave Marian a 2-1 lead, which the Knights held onto to take the top-10 win.

Stanfield played the hero for Marian, scoring her second goal of the season on her only attempt of the game. Stanfield's goal was the first game-winning goal in her career. Hill took two of Marian's four shots and scored the first goal of the game, while Delaney Taylor got the assist on the game winning goal. Oleksak recorded her fourth assist on the year while taking one shot. In goal, Rolfsen ended the match making four saves on five shots on frame.

Marian will enjoy a full week off before playing their next game on September 15, when they host No. 24 Northwestern Ohio. The match will begin at 3 PM following the developmental team game at 12:30 PM.
