INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian men's soccer team started their final week of the regular season by hosting Taylor that saw a 1-0 score that favored the Trojans on Wednesday night, moving them to 2-5-1 in league play and 5-9-2 overall on the season.
The first 45 minutes of play showed Marian controlling a majority of the possession, as they saw 10 opportunities to Taylor's four. In the first seven minutes of action, the Knights put together four shot attempts that came from Nate Van Keulen, Evan Dawdy, Dylann Merchand, and Alan Tenorio.
Marian continued to search for opportunities the remainder of the half, putting together six more shot attempts that saw the Trojan keeper denying two.
With less than a minute of action left in the first half, the duo of Van Keulen and Tenorio each fired a shot off to give the Knights a great look, but were unable to execute and went into the break with the score even at 0-0.
The second half began with the Knights fouling the Trojans in the box, sending Taylor's Sawyer Watterson to take the penalty kick that would go past the Marian keeper to give the Trojans the 1-0 lead. After the goal, the Knights did not back down as Sam Goodin made an attempt at a goal and seeing it go just high, before Justin Kapp fired one at the Taylor goalie.
Marian had some great opportunities in the half, taking four corner kicks and taking two more attempts late. However, Taylor controlled most of the possession in the second half, outshooting the Knights six to four, and would be able to put up a strong defensive effort to hold off Marian, picking up the 1-0 win.
Tenorio and Valentin Neuhold each took three shot attempts, while Van Keulen and Dawdy each fired off two. Goodin, Sebastian Gonzalez, Merchand, and Kapp all took one. Alvaro Rueda played the full 90 minutes in goal, making five saves with six shots on goal.
The Knights will finish up the regular season on Saturday as they host Indiana Wesleyan at 3 PM and celebrate senior day.
