Marian Clinches Outright Crossroads League Regular Season Championship

Marion, Ind. – The Marian women's soccer team has officially clinched outright Crossroads League Regular Season Champions after taking down Indiana Wesleyan in a 4-0 shutout win. With the win the Knights improve to 15-0-2 overall and 8-0-1 in league play.

Marian came out in attack mode right out the gate in the first half, outshooting Indiana Wesleyan 10-4. The Knights had three shot attempts in a span of three minutes, coming from Jacelyn Smith and Allie Schlom, before Maya Decker received the ball from Erin Oleksak, as she crossed the ball between two IWU defenders and blasted one in for the first goal of the day in the 14th minute.

The offensive threat did not end there for the Knights as Naomi Walters missed just high 30 seconds later, and Oleksak took her first attempt that made the Wildcat goalie have to make the save. The Indiana Wesleyan defense had to work with Marian firing off two more shots that soon led to a goal by Schlom in the 34th minute to send the Knights to halftime up 2-0.

After the break, Marian did not let up as they continued to put pressure on Indiana Wesleyan with Smith posting a shot 24 seconds into the half, but missing wide. Moments later Noelle Rolfsen made a great save on a Wildcat header to keep the hosts scoreless.

The Knights found their third goal of the game coming in the 58th minute after Oleksak played the ball to Marian Corro Celma who put it in the left side of the netting to advance Marian's lead to 3-0.

The Wildcats posed a bit of a threat late, making two more shot attempts, but would find the hands of Rolfsen, before the Knights would add another goal at the 71:43 mark coming from Walters on the assist from Oleksak.

With a 4-0 lead, Indiana Wesleyan could not climb their way back and Marian would go on to win 4-0 and to clinch the Crossroads League Regular Season Championship.

Marian outshot Indiana Wesleyan 16-8 with Oleksak and Walters leading with four, while Walters also added one goal from her attempts and Oleksak had three assists. Schlom, Corro Celma, and Decker each had one goal. Rolfsen got the win in goal as she made six saves on six shots on goal.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday, November 5 to host the Crossroads League Quarterfinals.
