INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 2 Marian women's soccer team dominated the pitch at St. Vincent Field Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 rout of Saint Francis (Ind.). With the win the Knights improve to 11-0-1 overall and 4-0 in Crossroads League play.
Marian had no shortage of scoring chances in the opening minutes, including close-range efforts from Maya Decker and Erin Oleksak before Jacelyn Smith would boot one in on the assist from Allie Schlom at the 2:27 mark to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead.
Decker, Oleksak, and Schlom all made attempts for a goal, but it was Naomi Walters at the 11:04 mark putting one in the back of the net behind another Schlom assist to advance the lead to 2-0.
The Knights owned control of the match, keeping the Cougars pinned on their side of the field throughout the first 45 minutes. Marian erupted for 17 shots, while only allowing the visitors one.
After the two early Marian goals, the hosts produced four more shot attempts until in the 24th minute when Walters would breakdown the Cougar defense and put one past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the game and team's third.
The Marian offense continued to make the Saint Francis defense work, as Schlom and Jensen Summers fired off the next three shot attempts before the Knights' fourth goal came at the 37:24 mark when Oleksak rocketed one past the keeper to give Marian the 4-0 lead at the half.
The Knights went into the break with the 17-0 margin in shots and produced four corner kicks.
Marian came out the gates launching shots once again with Lindsey Stoughton and Stephanie Ramos each taking a piece of the action early in the half, before Oleksak fired off two shots in a span of two minutes in search of her second goal. At the 69:58 mark, Silvia Quezada had a great look at goal, but the Cougar keeper managed to get her hands on it to keep the score 4-0.
Although the Knights were unable to find the back of the net in the second half, they still managed to notch nine shots and two corners, while allowing only one Cougar shot attempt.
Marian finished the game with 26 shot attempts while holding USF to just one attempt. Walters paved the way by finishing with two goals, while Smith and Oleksak each added one. Scholm dished out two assists while also firing off five shots.
Noelle Rolfsen and Mycheala Johnson combined for the goalkeeping shutout, with Johnson coming up with the only save.
The Knights are back home Wednesday night, playing host to Mt. Vernon Nazarene at 7 PM.
