Spring Arbor, Mich. - The Marian men's basketball team used a 15-5 run over the final five minutes of the first half to spring board into gear, and poured on 48 points in the second half as they rolled to an 82-59 victory over Spring Arbor. Marian's 2-0 start to league play is backed by their 7-0 record on the year.
Marian started out strong in the first half, scoring on four of their first six possessions to take a 10-6 lead. A steal and a fastbreak layup from Taeshon Cherry increased the lead, while baskets from Luke Gohmann and Josh Bryan helped the visitors pounce to a 19-15 lead. Spring Arbor would answer and cut the lead to one on an Eli White three at the 12:12 mark, and from their the scoring came to a half.
The Knights missed 10 consecutive baskets after Bryan moved the total to 19, while three turnovers helped Spring Arbor take control as they moved in front 23-19. The Knights drought lasted nearly eight minutes of game time, but came to an end with 4:37 as Gohmann scored a layup. Gohmann's basket started a run, as Cherry, Hayden Langkabel, and Christian Harvey pitched in on a 15-5 run, giving Marian the lead. A three from Cherry at the buzzer gave Marian a 34-28 lead going into halftime.
Spring Arbor challenged Marian as the second half started keeping the game a two-possession contest, but a Langkabel trifecta got the Knights rolling as a 7-0 run from the senior pushed his team in front by 13. The Cougars were able to slash back within nine following four unanswered points from Gabe Newhof, but a Brody Whitaker trey halted the spree.
Leading 52-40, 1a10-1 run started by Gohmann at the 12:06 mark put Marian in the driver's seat for good, as their lead surged to 21 points. Marian led by as many as 16 points for the final 11:27 of the game, and led by as many as 25 points as they comfortably closed their 82-59 victory over the Cougars.
Marian shot 50.8 percent from the field as a team, and were led in scoring by Cherry who poured in 19 to go with eight rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Langkabel finished with 15 points and a career-high nine assists, while Harvey had 11. Gohmann and Bryan combined for 17, and Whitaker led the bench players with 10 points.
The Knights will go on the road this weekend, playing in the annual NAIA Show in Kingsport, Tenn., when they will take on Ave Maria and Bluefield. The first game of the weekend tips on Saturday at 12:45 p.m.
