INDIANAPOLIS - Fueled by strong defensive stands and multiple scoring runs, the Marian men's basketball team coasted to a 103-50 victory Thursday night over Governors State. Marian's win gives them a 2-0 start to the young 2022 season.
Marian started strong as they returned to regular season play, getting a stop and second chance score from Christian Harvey on their opening possession. The Knights continued to get shots to drop, with Luke Gohmann and Taeshon Cherry knocking down shots from inside and out, building a 9-3 lead at the media timeout. Nolan Foster made an immediate contribution coming in off the bench out of the timeout, and soon had their lead at 10 points as Jackson Ames converted.
Governors State would knock down a pair of threes as Trenton Nadolski drained a pair of shots off the wing, slicing the Knights lead down to seven points at multiple stretches in the half. A turnover from the Jaguars led to an easy fastbreak layup from Maximus Gizzi, and started a commanding run for the Knights. Following the Gizzi layup, the Knights began to light it up from outside, as Gohmann and Josh Bryan each canned a three as part of an 18-0 run that lasted over five minutes. The strong run pushed the Knights in front by 20 points, as they would go into the half with a commanding 48-23 lead.
More of the same effort came from the Knights in the start of the second half, as quick scores from Harvey and Bryan would begin a 15-3 run out of the intermission. Two three-pointers from Hayden Langkabel and a breakaway dunk from Cherry allowed Marian to push their lead to 39 points, with the margin reaching 41 points with over 13 minutes to go in the game. The Knights would finish the final 13:08 on a 29-21 advantage, as Gavin Foe, Luke Heady, and Gizzi led a charge from the bench. Foe and Ames capped the scoring in the final two minutes, helping close the one-sided 103-50 win over the Jaguars.
The Knights scored 40 bench points and had six players end the game in double figures, led by Bryan's 18 points. Bryan made four of the Knights 12 three pointers, and finished 7-10 from the field. Harvey had 12 points to go with his game-high five assists, while Cherry and Langkabel each scored 13 points. Ames and Gizzi each scored 10 off the bench, with Ames recording a team-leading nine rebounds.
Marian had 23 assists on 42 made field goals, and recorded 48 rebounds, with 12 coming on the offensive end.
The Knights will finish their breif two-game home stand on November 8, as they tip against Cardinal Stritch at 6 p.m.
