Naomi Walters' Hat Trick Helps Lifts Marian Over Tennessee Southern 4-1

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – The No.2 Marian women's soccer team earned a trip to the NAIA Women's Soccer Championship Semifinals after downing No. 7 University of Tennessee Southern 4-1 in a revenge match from last season on Thursday night. With the win the Knights are now 21-0-2.

Marian Corro Celma got the Knights rolling with a shot in the seventh minute, but saw it go just wide before UT Southern responded with a corner and shot. It was Naomi Walters putting on a show for a six-minute span as she fired two goals past the Firehawks' goalie to give Marian the 2-0 lead early in the first half.

UT Southern put together an aggressive final 30 minutes of play in the first half as they put together 11 shot attempts and four corner kicks. Tennessee Southern outshot the Knights 12-7 in the half, but the Marian defense was able to stand the test and keep the Firehawks scoreless.

The second half was a similar story in regards to shot attempts with the margin being 11-6 in favor of Tennessee Sothern, but it was Marian executing on their shot attempts as they scored two more goals in the second half.

Once again, it was Walters getting the early goal to start the half as she received a corner kick from Maya Decker to complete the hat trick. The Firehawks were unable to answer as they took a shot attempt that went just high before Erin Oleksak would add to scoreboard for Marian in the 56th minutes as she beat the defense and booted one in back netting to make the score 4-0. Walters took another attempt less than a minute later, making the UT Southern goalie have to make the save.

Tennessee Southern continued to put the offensive pressure on, but the back line of Isabelle Stanfield, Camryn Gietl, Gretchen Mallin, and goalie Noelle Rolfsen proved to be the tougher side. It wasn't until the 89th minute when the Firehawks got a goal from Isabelle Vazquez; however, the late goal showed it was not enough as the Knights went on to win 4-1.

Walters led the charge for Marian with the hat trick on six shots attempted, while Oleksak added one goal on four attempts. Jacelyn Smith posted two shots, while Corro Celma had one. Rolfsen picked up the win in goal, making four saves.

Marian will face off with Cumberlands on Saturday at 5 PM EST.
