Dearborn, Mich. - The Marian women's basketball team tipped off a five-game road trip Wednesday night against Michigan-Dearborn, dominating in the third quarter as they coasted to a healthy 68-49 victory. Marian's win improves their season record to a 10-1 prior to their final Crossroads League game of the semester.
The Knights jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with scores on their first two possessions from Aliyah Evans, and captured the lead after allowing five unanswered on a three from Allison Bosse. Bosse, Ella Collier, and Evans combined for all of Marian's 19 first quarter points, as the junior trio pushed the lead to as many as seven in the first period. A three from Collier off the a Sara Majorosova assist allowed Marian to hold a 19-13 lead going into the second.Â
Marian jumped their lead to nine after the first 2:30, as four points from Evans helped the Knights increase their pace. A jumper from Kenna Kirby gave the visiting Knights their first double-digit lead of the night, but the Wolverines stayed competitve clawing back within seven points. Evans and Collier continued to be the catalyst on offense as the pair pitched in to push the lead to as many as 13. Dearborn would score the final three points of the half as the Marian offense went cold in the final two minutes, leaving the Knights on top 38-28 going into the break.
In the third quarter, Marian made their push as they out-scored the Wolverines 19-4. Michigan-Dearborn scored the first points of the half, and were held scoreless for the final 5:27 in the quarter. With Marian's defensive pressure keeping Dearborn off the scoreboard, the offense went to work through Bosse and Evans. Bosse's second layup in a 40-second window started a 14-0 run, with the three juniors and Majorosova pushing their team in front by 25 by quarter's end.
Carrying a 57-32 lead going into the fourth quarter, Marian continued to hold Dearborn out of the scorebook. A pair of Majorosova free throws pushed Marian on top by 27 for their largest lead of the game, while the Wolverine drought extended to 8:51 of gametime. Michigan broke their drought with 6:36 to play, but was too late to make a comeback as Marian closed their 68-49 road victory.Â
Collier led all players with 22 points as the junior recorded a block and six rebounds, while Evans scored 18 to go with seven rebounds. Bosse scored 13, as the trio combined for 53 of the 68 points. Kirby grabbed six rebounds off the bench, and Evans led the team with three steals. The Knights' defense forced 22 turnovers in the win.
Marian will wrap up Crossroads League play in the first half of their schedule on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they travel to Huntington.Â
