INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian men's soccer team was on the road Thursday evening as they took on neighboring IUPUI. In a chippy matchup between the two teams, the Knights were able to draw 2-2 with the Jaguars to move to 1-0-1 on the season.
The visiting Knights had a solid offensive approach in the first half, posting five shots compared to the Jaguars six. However, the Jags were able to capitalize off of one of their shots, scoring in the opening eight minutes to take the early 1-0 lead.
Romaric Berneron got the shots going for Marian, missing wide of the goal at the 12:32 mark before Nate Van Keulen took an attempt of his own four minutes later. Half way through the first half, Sebastian Gonzalez made the IUPUI goalkeeper work, as Gonzalez fired one high center.
Marian's defense held strong the remainder of the first half, holding the host to only two more shots while the Knights found some offensive momentum, posting one more good look with 49 seconds remaining off a Kameron Hooker attack.
The Knights came out after the break with an aggressive attack, scoring in the opening six minutes off a Berneron header that came from a Jack Reynolds assist to even things up at one a piece. The Navy and Gold defense came up big at the 52:46 mark, blocking a shot attempt of the host.
The duo of Gonzalez and Kameron Hooker teamed up at the 57:48 mark as they were able to draw the goalie away from the net. Gonzalez posted a great ball to Hooker who then hooked one in the back of the net to give the Knights the 2-1 advantage. With the momentum in favor of the Knights, the host were able to switch it their way, as they netted one past the Knights defense, squaring things up 2-2.
The remainder of the half, both teams showed off their defensive efforts by allowing no more scoring for the match. Behind the efforts of Van Keulen and Axel Perez-Leon, the Knights were able to provide one more attack in the final seven minutes of the match, but both would come up short in adding to the scoreboard.
Brandon Weiger posted a solid match in the net for Knights, playing the entire 90 minutes, making two saves and allowing two goals.
Marian will host Lourdes Saturday, August 27 at 1:00 PM in their home opener for the 2022 season.
