Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 24 Rio Grande Too Much For Marian

Rio Grande, Ohio – The Marian men's soccer team suffered the 10-1 loss on the road at No. 24 Rio Grande Saturday evening to end their non-conference slate. The Knights move to 3-4-1 and will start Crossroads League play in the coming week.

Both teams came out the gates firing to get the match started with both teams posting eight shots each. Justin Kapp took the first shot of the game, but was unable to capitalize as the shot was high. The Red Storm wasted no time to score their first goal of the match, notching one past the Marian keeper at the 11:54 mark. The shot by the host seemed to fuel an offensive attack as they went on to score their second goal about ten minutes later.

The Knights went through a bit of a dry spell until after the Red Storm scored their third goal of the half at the 25:53 mark that Tyler Prichard would try to answer with an attempt that would go wide left, before Sebastian Gonzalez would also make an attempt. The momentum swinged to the Knights for a period of time when a David Green goal on the assist from Nate Van Keulen would put Marian on the board to make the score 3-1. After the Marian goal, Van Keulen and Evan Dawdy each took their shot at a goal, but was unable to execute.

Rio Grande came out after the break with the offensive pressure, scoring three more goals and holding the Knights scoreless. The hosts were the first to make a move, booting one on goal that would be saved by Nikalaas Kolosso, before later giving up a goal around a minute later to increase the lead to 4-1. Marian struggled to find their offense in the second half and were only able to fire off two shots and the Red Storm were able to crank out 22 shots and put seven of them in the back of the net to take the 10-1 victory.

Rio Grande erupted for 30 total shots while the Knights only had nine. Green had the lone goal for the Knights while Van Keulen led the way in shots with three and an dished out one assist. Kolosso took the loss in the net and had four save, while Alvaro Rueda came in later in the second half and had three saves.

Marian will return to action September 24 as they travel to Grace for a 7 PM kickoff to start Crossroads League play.
