INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian men's soccer team rebounded into the win column on Wednesday night at St. Vincent Field, as the Knights poured on three goals in a 3-1 victory over St. Francis (Ill.). Marian's win improves the overall record to 3-1-1 on the season.
After breaking through a sloppy opening 10 minutes of play, the Knights began to take the shape and found their first shot of the game in the 15th minute Phillip Seifert. Marian began working their offense and drew a pair of corner kicks in the 22nd minute. The second corner off the foot of Nate Van Keulen led to the night's first goal, as Dylann Merchand was able to get his head on the ball, and direct the pass into the goal. Marian stayed the aggressor for the remainder of the half, picking up a pair of shots as they closed out the final minutes of the half.
The Knights trailed in shot attempts at the half 7-4, but held their 1-0 lead on the board going into intermission.
Marian opened the second half with a quick attack, taking a pair of shots in the first minute off the restart. Gaining a third shot off of a corner, the Knights were able to come away with their second goal as Will Mann came away with the redirect off of a Jack Reynolds corner. With a 2-0 lead in the pocket, Marian stayed on the attack, but were caught out of position twice as the Fighting Saints worked a pair of counter strikes, resulting in shot attempts.
St. Francis would finally convert a goal after their string of shots, scoring in the 57th minute to make it a 2-1 score. Marian would answer with a counter run of their own just three minutes later, as Evan Dawdy found Reynolds for a fast break score, jumping the home team back in front by two goals. The Knights controlled possesion for the final 30 minutes of the match, and cruised to the finish ending the game in their 3-1 victory.
Marian and St. Francis ended the match level in shot attempts with 13 each, with the Knights rebounding in the second half piling on nine shots to the Fighting Saints' six. Sebastian Gonzalez led the team with five shot attempts, while Merchand had two inculding the game's first goal. Reynolds totaled three points in the match scoring and assisting on a goal, and Mann converted his lone shot attempt of the night for a goal.
Marian will stay at home as they close the week on Saturday afternoon, taking on Cumberland University at 1 p.m.
