Women's Tennis Advances to Crossroads League Championship With Upset Win Over Bethel

Mishawaka, Ind. - The Marian women's tennis team avenged their season opening loss against (RV) Bethel with a postseason win, as the Knights upended the Pilots in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals. Marian's upset win over the second-ranked Pilots came in a 4-2 result, as the Knights clinched their berth into Monday's championship match.

Marian grinded out the first point of the match in doubles play, taking two of the three matches against the Pilots to build an early 1-0 lead. Isadora Muller and Paloma Caceres Villalba scored a 6-3 win over Kyla Steyn and Julieta Gonzales at No. 3 doubles for the first win, but the duo of Michelle Irigoyen and Ana Barbosa Fernandez were unable to pick up the second. Irigoyen and Barbosa were defeated at No. 2 doubles 6-4 by Kaavya Palani and Ariadni Kokoula. With doubles knotted 1-1, eyes turned to No. 1 doubles, where the Knights were able to claim the point as Katharina Bopst and Yasmin Imamniyazova scored a 6-4 win against Szilvi Ferenczy and Kyla Heckaman.

With the 1-0 lead in hand, Marian turned their focus to singles, but were unsuccessful in their first go as Caceres was defeated by Sandy Sharaf 6-3, 6-2. Bethel again scored on the match as Kokoula defeated Irigoyen 6-2, 6-4, putting the home team in front 2-1.

Marian rebounded at No. 1 singles as Imamniyazova landed 6-3, 6-4 win over Palani, leveling the match score 2-2. Marian continued the comeback trail as Bopst won her match at No. 5 singles 6-2, 7-5 (5), defeating Steyn to claim a 3-2 match lead. With two matches left to decide the final, Barbosa came out with a three-set win over Ferenczy at No. 2 singles, winning 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, clinching the upset victory. Marian's Emma Chrome would go unfinished in her match following the 4-2 victory, as she ended the day in the third set against Gonzales.

Marian's win improves the fall record to 8-2 overall, as they advance to the Crossroads League Championship match on Monday. Marian will travel to the regular season champions Indiana Wesleyan, taking on the Wildcats at 4 p.m.
