INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian men's soccer team fell short to No. 4 Grace on Saturday afternoon, as Grace picked up the 3-0 win at St. Vincent Field. The loss drops the Knights to 7-2-2 overall and 2-2 in Crossroads League play.
Grace wasted no time to get the game started by scoring within the first two minutes of the game to grab the early 1-0 lead. The Lancers continued to control possession as they added another goal to their lead in the ninth minute. With the visitors controlling possession, Marian was able to find their first attempt of the game after a free kick allowed
Kyle Alb to fire off a header, but would sail just high. The Knights were able to fire off three more shot attempts, but it was Grace still holding the 6-4 shot advantage after the first half to hold the 2-0 lead.
The Lancers picked up right where they left off to begin the second half as they fired off two quick shots, but it was
Juan Torres coming up big to keep his team only down two. Grace continued to threaten the Marian defense and in the 61st minute their effort was rewarded as they executed on an offensive break to extend their lead to 3-0. In the 62nd minute, the Knights saw their first look of the second half with a corner kick coming from
Yoshiaki Takeishi that ended with a header from
Sebastian Gonzalez that would go just high.
Marian saw good looks throughout the half, but were unable to produce anything against a strong Grace defense. A shot by
Donovan Doolittle and header by
Phillip Seifert gave the Knights hope later in the second half, but both shots would come up short to leave Marian scoreless. With the 3-0 lead at hand, Grace did not let up as they kept the aggressive pressure on the Marian defense, firing off three more shots in the final 15 minutes.
Grace led Marian in the shot cateogry 18-8, with 11 of their shots being on goal. Eight different Knights took a shot, while Torres made eight saves and allowed three goals in his full 90 minutes of action.
Marian will have a chance to get back in the win column on Wednesday at Spring Arbor. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. against the Cougars.
