INDIANAPOLIS - After falling behind by double-digits in the first quarter, the Marian women's basketball team rallied and won each of the final three quarters on Saturday to earn an 84-64 win over No. 9 Georgetown. Marian's second consecutive top-15 win over a Mid-South Conference foe gives them a record of 10-1 on the season.
Georgetown set the tone early and controlled the pace in the first four minutes of the game, blitzing Marian from inside and out with 14 points from three different scorers. The offense for Marian failed to match the high tempo, coming out flat shooting just 1-for-five from the field. The Tigers would lead by as many as 13 in the first quarter, but were unable to hold a double-digit lead after one period as two
Kinnidy Garrard free throws in the final 30 seconds made it an eight-point contest.
After trailing 23-15 through 10 minutes, Marian turned it around in the second quarter, as the offense began firing on all cylinders. The Knights out-scored Georgetown 26-14 in the quarter, using multiple runs led by Garrard,
Allison Bosse, and
Josie Trabel to take the lead. Marian tied the game at 27-27 with 5:55 to play in the contest, and after a back and forth stretch took the lead for good on a three from
Taylor Double. Double's trifecta with 1:36 remaining in the half put Marian on top 38-34, and helped the Knights go into halftime with a 41-37 lead.
A three from
Ella Collier helped set the tone in the third quarter, as Marian opened the half on a 7-0 run to go in front by 11 points. Work at the foul line, along with open jump shots from Bosse and
Abbey McNally allowed Marian to control the tempo, as the Knights again won a quarter holding a 22-15 advantage in the third period. The Tigers would attempt to establish momentum toward the end of the quarter as they got Marian in foul trouble, but were unable to get back within double-figures as the home team lead 63-52 going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter Marian out-played the Tigers and got to the foul line early, putting the visitors lineup in rotation problems. The Knights led by double figures throughout the entire quarter, and led by as many as 24 as they closed the game out at the foul line. Collier and McNalley did the majority of Marian's scoring in the quarter with it primarily coming at the charity stripe, as the 21-12 advantage in the final period led to Marian's 84-64 win over No. 9 Georgetown.
Collier led all players with 19 points and had five rebounds, while Garrard finished with 16 and a team-best nine rebounds. McNally scored 18 points and had eight rebounds, and Bosse scored 12 while adding two blocked shots. Marian's bench combined for 19 points in the win, with Trabel leading with eight off the pine.
Marian will travel to Oakland City on Tuesday before taking a holiday break, tipping off at 6 p.m. against the Mighty Oaks.Â
