INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian women's lacrosse team picked up their third win of the young season on Wednesday night, defeating Thomas More 21-5. Marian led 11-4 at the halftime break, and started the running clock midway throughout the third quarter as they improved to 3-0 on the year.
Emily Blackburn scored the first goal of the game as her teammate Ella Grace Giedd connected in front of the cage, providing Marian the lead 3:17 into play. Thomas More would answer with a goal of their own to level the score, but back-to-back snipes from Katelynn Gray and Giedd jumped Marian's lead to a pair of goals. Ruby Mason would finish the Knights first quarter scoring with her first goal of the Knight, helping Marian claim a 4-2 lead after the opening stanza.
In the second quarter, the Knights went on a commanding run, scoring seven unanswered goals in a nine-minute window. Mason started the frenzy just over three minutes into the quarter, while Gray scored consecutive unassisted goals to complete the hat trick. Blackburn and Giedd added to their totals in the game, while Madison Ash and Madeline Dumke scored to shoot Marian's lead to nine. The Knights run would end with 1:53 remaining in the first half as Kendra Yurt scored for the Saints, as she would net a second goal before the half's end to make it a seven-goal game at the break.
Leading 11-4 at halftime, Marian made sure to put the game away in the third quarter, scoring in lightning time with Mason converting a free position goal 19 seconds into the half. Grace Martin scored her first goal of the game with 12:49 remaining in the third quarter, and nearly one minute later Mason scored her fourth of the game to put Marian on top 14-4. The goal would start the running clock, but didn't slow down the Knights as their defense led to more scores, forcing turnovers that would lead to goals from Gray, Mason, and Tori Farkas before the quarter break.
The Knights 6-0 blitz in the third quarter put the game to bed, as Marian rotated their reserves throughout a 4-1 fourth quarter. Hayli Irvin netted her first goal of the season to start the period, while Martin would add another to provide a 15-goal lead. Thomas More would get one final goal to find the back of the net in the fourth quarter as the ball slipped past Grace Coyne, but it was not enough to carry momentum. Mackenzie Brooks and Taleah Nool would score their first collegiate goals before the game's end, capping Marian's 21-5 victory.
Marian forced 23 turnovers in the one-sided win, causing 16 of them. Mason led the Knights with five goals, while Gray scored four and led the team with seven draw controls. Blackburn, Giedd, and Martin each scored twice, with Giedd leading the way with four assists. Ash led the Knights in caused turnovers forcing four Saint miscues, and Dumke had a team-best five ground balls.
Marian will travel to Missouri Baptist on March 7 as they kick off their spring break games. The contest in St. Louis, Mo., will begin at 4 p.m.
