INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian women's lacrosse team rallied from a four-goal halftime deficit to take a late fourth quarter lead over St. Ambrose Friday night, but the advantage didn't stick as the Fighting Bees scored the final three goals of the game, including the game-winning score in overtime to take a 13-12 win. Marian falls to 3-2 overall on the year following the loss.
Marian started the game out strong as
Ella Grace Giedd fired home the game's opening goal, netting her first score of the night 3:32 into action. St. Ambrose would respond with a tying goal just over two minutes later, but were denied a go-ahead opportunity as Marian got strong play in the cage by
Katherine Hirsch. The Bees would add another goal to their total before
Grace Martin tied the game on an unassisted goal, but the tide shifted in favor of St. Ambrose, who scored back to back goals to end the first quarter with a 4-2 lead.
The Bees stayed on the attack and controlled the pace early in the second quarter, netting a goal under four minutes in while getting another as the clock wound near three minutes remaining. Needing a goal to regain life on the Knights sideline,
Ashlynn Gray took matters into her own hands as she won the ensuing draw control off Clair Jeffers goal, and raced down the field for her first score of the night. Gray's goal stood as the final in the first half despite a furious attack in the waning seconds from the Knights, as Marian hit the break trailing 6-3.
St. Ambrose was able to push their lead back to four goals on a score from Anabelle Brown just over five minutes into the second half, but the Knights worked quick to get back into rhythm. Gray won the ensuing draw to set up the offense, with her sister
Katelynn Gray dishing an assist to Giedd to make it a 7-4 goal. The Knights compounded the score into another, taking over after a turnover and getting a score from Kate. Gray on a free position goal. The run continued as Kate. Gray assisted on another Giedd goal, with the freshman completing a hat trick on her goal with 5:51 remaining in the third quarter. Marian would win the ensuing draw control, but a turnover in the attacking zone let St. Ambrose back into the game, as they scored off the giveaway to reclaim a two-goal advantage.
Madison Ash would cut the deficit back to one with 4:01 to play in the quarter, but a goal with 3.3 seconds remaining in the period by Abigail Varkalis allowed the Bees to hold a 9-7 lead after three quarters.
A Marian turnover led to St. Ambrose's first goal of the fourth quarter as they pushed back ahead 10-8. The Knights responded strong with a
Grace Martin goal, while another goal from Martin on a free position man-advantage brought the home team back within a goal. Marian had captured momentum with the goal, netting a score from Ash. Gray on a free position shot to tie the game, while Giedd's fourth goal of the game with 6:21 remaining put the Knights back in the lead. The run closed with Kate. Gray scoring a man-up free position goal, putting the Knights in the lead by a 12-10 count with 4:57 remaining.
Marian's lead was cut to one just 26 seconds after Gray's goal to cut the lead down to one, and with 60 seconds remaining the Bees tied the game at 12-12 as the Knights were unsuccessful on two potential insurance goal chances. The game would go into overtime for the first time in program history after Giedd's shot with four seconds missed wide. St. Ambrose won the draw control to start overtime, and 70 seconds after the start the game concluded as Maddie Wiltrout scored the game-winner, downing the Knights 13-12.
The Knights were led in scoring by Giedd, who scored four goals, while forcing a team-high three turnovers. Martin completed a hat trick with three goals, and each of the Gray sisters posted two goals.
Katelynn Gray had three of Marian's four assists. Five different Knights recorded three ground balls. In goal, Hirsch suffered her second loss of the season, allowing 13 goals and making 11 saves.
Marian will finish their two-game home stand on Sunday, March 12, as they take on Midland at 12 p.m. from St. Vincent Field.
