Knights Overpower Goshen 3-0 in Saturday Sweep

Goshen, Ind. - The Marian volleyball team finished their weekend road trip with a perfect 2-0 record Saturday afternoon, as the Knights took out Goshen College in three sets to claim their third Crossroads League win on the year. Marian, now 9-5 overall on the year and 3-1 in league play, return home winners of two straight.

The Knights won the first set of the match 25-15, using a 4-0 run early in the game led by Averi Lanman and Mikayla Christiansen. The run helped Marian build their lead to 10-5, where the Knights continued to pour it on as Christiansen and Khori Dryden continued to attack from the outside. Goshen would make a late charge at Marian with a three point surge to get within four, but Marian prevented a let down, as they ended the opening set on a 7-1 run, scoring the final five points of the game with Nicole Wilkinson and Gabby Fish winning the set on a block.

Marian again won the early momentum as the match moved into set two, using a 5-0 sprint led by a pair of blocks to go in front 8-3 on the Maple Leafs. Goshen would keep close with Marian despite the early attack, keeping within striking distance at four points for much of the early parts in the game. A much needed kill from Christiansen off the set of Logan Smith snapped a Goshen run and allowed Marian to keep their hold on the set, eventually taking their 18-14 lead and turning it into a 25-18 set victory. Back to back blocks from Jaymison Summers helped Marian take the 2-0 match lead.

Goshen would start the third set strong despite trailing 2-0 in the match, opening the set on a 5-2 lead. Marian slowly worked back into play as Gabby Fish got involved in the offense, as the junior helped the Knights take back the lead and build a four-point cushion. Marian broke the game open on a kill from Avery Toole, as the lead quickly grew from three points to 11 in a matter of 12 rallies. Emma Hirchak would also get involved in Marian's third set assault, as a 7-0 run put the game away, with Marian taking the third set 25-15.

The Knights posted their second straight match with a hitting percentage over .300, with the team hitting .306 in their win. Marian had 43 kills including 18 in the final set, and were led by Gabby Fish's 11 spikes. Christiansen finished with seven kills and four digs, and Dryden had six kills to go with her four digs. Katie Hardegree led the setters with 20 assists, and Jaymison Summers had a team-best 5.0 blocks.

Marian will return home for back to back matches next week, first hosting No. 16 Bethel University on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the PE Center.
