Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Koger's Late Goal Lifts Marian Past (RV) Ottawa 3-2

SURPRISE, Ariz. Katie Koger's goal with 15 ticks left on the clock lifted the No. 2 Marian women's soccer team past (RV) Ottawa 3-2 Monday morning in Arizona. The win wraps up the Arizona trip and the Knights leave 1-0-1, moving their record to 4-0-1 overall.

While nothing could top the dramatic finish, the first half had its own bit of flare. It was Marian scoring early on to take the 1-0 lead after Sophie Decker found Naomi Walters on the cross, who then headed in home at the 11th minute. Koger and Grace Crawford tried to extend the Marian lead a few minutes later, but were unable to execute on their attempts. Marian controlled possession in the first 45 minutes, having five shots to Ottawa's one, holding the 1-0 advantage at the break.

Similar to the first half, it was the Knights putting themselves on the scoreboard first. This time around Decker found herself on the opposite end of the ball as she put one in the back of the net for her first collegiate goal after the ricochet from Koger's crossbar hit, giving her team the 2-0 lead at the 45:56 mark.

Ottawa started to find the momentum after trailing two goals, as they fired off four shots and eventually found the goal on their fourth attempt. The Spirit continued to hold the possession around the next five minutes, registering three corners and a shot. The ball finally found its way back to the feet of the Knights, as Marian Corro Celma booted one on frame that the goalie had to save. With nearly eight minutes left to play, the hosts were able to execute on the corner to tie the game 2-2.

Both teams were going back and forth the remainder of the time in search for a possible game winning goal. Ottawa made the first move, but the ball would find the hands of Kristen Morgan to keep the score locked at 2-2.

Just when it started to look like the game was going end in a 2-2 draw, Koger found herself with the ball as she dribbled through the defense and fired one past the keeper to score the game winner with 15 seconds left to play. Koger's goal lifted Marian to the 3-2 victory over Ottawa.

In Marian's 13 shots, six were on goal, with six players taking at least one attempt. Koger led Marian with five shots, scoring the game winner and adding an assist, while Decker also dished out an assist to go along with her one goal. Walters added a goal with her two shot attempts, while Crawford had three shots. Morgan was productive in goal, making four saves and allowing two goals in a full 90 minutes of action.

Marian will have a quick turnaround playing their next game on Wednesday at St. Francis (Ill.). Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. est.
