INDIANAPOLIS – After a scoreless first half, the Knights put Marian fans on their feet with two timely goals to secure a 2-0 victory over Trinity Christian, Wednesday night at St. Vincent Field. Marian is now 2-0-2 on the season.
The first 45 minutes was an even battle, with the two teams going back and forth on the pitch. Although it was Marian narrowly outshooting Trinity, the Trolls were on the attack first with a header attempt in the first seven minutes. The Knights saw their first look at the 12:17 mark, coming from a header by Phillip Seifert that ended wide. Marian continued to put pressure on the Trolls' defense by coming up with two shots from Sebastian Gonzalez and a corner kick.
It seemed to be all Marian the next 10 minutes of action, as the hosts controlled a majority of possession and fired off three more shots. After the Knights' rally, the Trolls took over the ball for the next few minutes as they ended the half with five more shot attempts. Both teams saw opportunity, but were unable to capitalize as the first half would end scoreless.
The second half was sparked by a shot from Seifert that was saved by the goalie. Kyle Alb had the next best looks for Marian, as he booted one on frame and knocked a header just right of the goal. The Trolls took their first shot of the half in the 60th minute, but were unable to execute as the ball hit the post. The time continued to erase off the clock with both teams looking for their first goal of the match.
In the 80th minute, the Knights saw a pair of fresh legs enter into the game as Jayden Francis made his presence known. The sophomore gave Marian the 1-0 lead after firing one into the back of the net. Francis' goal ignited the Marian offense, with Seifert adding goal number two on the scoreboard at the 89:08 mark to cap off a 2-0 victory for the Knights.
Francis and Seifert scored the two goals for Marian, while Agon Hoxha added one assist. Juan Torres made two saves and recorded the shutout in the full 90 minutes in goal for the Knights.
Marian will be back in action Saturday at 4 p.m. when they travel to Holy Cross.
