Marian Records Clean Sheet Against Holy Cross

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A two goal first half fueled the Marian men's soccer team to a shutout victory as they defeated Holy Cross 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. Marian is now 3-0-2 on the season.

Marian was keen from the opening whistle, controlling possession and scoring early. The Knights found the back of the net in the seventh minute after Josh Wesseling connected with Sebastian Gonzalez for the goal. In a chance to even the score, Holy Cross made back-to-back shots, but their looks were denied by Juan Torres.

The Knights continued to put pressure on the Saints as Phillip Seifert and Wesseling fired off shots, but saw their shots go high and wide. After seeing a header go high off of the corner from Yoshiaki Takeishi, Marian's efforts paid off in the 25th minute as Seifert put one home to give his team the 2-0 lead. Both teams took a shot late in the half with both just missing, giving Marian the 2-0 lead at the break.

Holy Cross was on the attack first, blasting one high before Seifert took a pair of shots off frame. Marian saw a good look at the 60:28 mark, but the keeper was able to make the save of Kyle Alb's header attempt. The Saints had several chances to score their first goal of the game, but were unable to execute as their shots were either off frame or saved by Torres.

Even with Holy Cross booting 10 shots with four on goal, the hosts were unable to find back netting and the Knights would hold on to win 2-0.

Torres was excellent for the Knights in goal, making four saves and keeping a clean sheet. Marian held a 16-10 shot advantage, with Seifert leading the way with seven shots and scoring one goal. Alb and Wesseling each shot twice, while Gonzalez scored on his lone shot attempt.

The Knights will return home September 13 when they host IU-Northwest at 7:30 p.m.
