INDIANAPOLIS – One goal was all that was needed to earn their sixth victory on Saturday afternoon, as Kaitlyn Lavezzi's 69th minute goal lifted Marian to a 1-0 win against Missouri Baptist. The Knights improved to a 6-0-1 overall record this season following the win.
Marian had ample opportunities to score in the first half, taking eight shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Missouri Baptist took the game's first attempt with a strike in the third minute, but saw their shot reach the keeper Mycheala Johnson. Marian Corro Celma, Naomi Walters, and Grace Crawford put pressure on the Spartans in the 15th and 16th minute with shots firing, but the looks were either denied or off frame. The Spartans took their turn less than 10 minutes later when Johnson was forced to make the save again.
In the 40th minute Knights fans were on their feet after a strong look on goal with a header shot coming from Silvia Quezada, but her attempt met the keeper and left the score locked at 0-0. Marian led in shot attempts in the first half 8-4.
The Knights came out firing in the second half as they fired off five shots in the opening nine minutes, with three shots coming on goal. Good looks continued to come for Marian when Walters blasted one that bounced off the goalie and found the foot of Corro Celma, whose shot ended high. Missouri Baptist tried to respond to Marian's aggressive start with back-to-back shots in the 65th minute, but were blocked by the Marian defense.
The Knights' hard work finally paid off in the 69th minute when Lavezzi booted the ball in back netting after Walters' shot bounced back off the goalie, giving the assist to Walters on the play. The Spartans tried to answer but Johnson came up with the another big save to keep Marian with 1-0 lead.
Marian continued to put pressure on the Spartans defense as they fired off five more shot attempts, while their opponent only had two. It was the Knights outshooting the Spartans 24-8 in the match to grab the 1-0 shutout victory.
For the game, Johnson saw five shots come near the net, making the save on all. Walters led Marian in shots with six and added an assist, while Lavezzi took three shots scoring on her only look on goal. Crawford and Corro Celma also took three attempts, while Stratman and Quezada added two.
The Knights will return home for their final non-conference match, hosting University of Northwestern Ohio on September 13 for a 12 p.m. match.
