Cedar Falls, Iowa - The Marian wrestling team suffered a pair of defeats on Friday at the annual NWCA National Duals, as the Knights were bested by No. 4 Southeastern and No. 5 Doane. The young Knights lineup lost their opening match 32-9 and the second 35-12. Marian is 1-5 overall this season in dual competition.
#4 Southeastern 32-9 Marian
Marian won each of their first three matches against the Fire, taking victories at 125, 133, and 141.
Logan Richardson won 10-6 over Trevor Borom to score the win by decision, and
Anthony Hughes scored three points with his upset in overtime against No. 6 Andrew Voiles. Hughes won by a sudden-victory score of 4-1.
Logan Wagner would record Marian's final win in the match, taking out No. 13 Kael Brisker 2-1 by decision.
The rest of the match went to Southeastern as they rattled off seven consecutive wins. The Fire earned two tech falls, two wins by fall, a major decision, and two wins by decision as they rattled off 32 unanswered points for the win.
Elliott Rodgers gave Marian their best opportunity for a fourth win, but he was defeated 6-3 by Graham Calhoun.
#5 Doane 35-12 Marian
Doane opened the match with a 6-0 lead, as Richardson was unable to pick up his second win of the day after losing by fall in the first period.
Anthony Hughes and
Logan Wagner helped Marian take a lead as they won their second match, with Hughes landing a 10-4 win over No. 14 Devin Avedissian, while Wagner scored a dominant 20-3 tech fall win against Tristen Brown.
The Knights led 8-5 following Wagner's win, but from there would lose three straight matches, as the Tigers picked up tech fall, major decision, and fall victories.
Elliott Rodgers cut into the bleeding as he defeated No. 14 Cael Jordan 14-6, scoring four points with the major decision. The Knights were unable to stack wins after the Rodgers victory, as two pins and a decision sealed the victory for Doane as they won 35-12.
Marian will finish their time in Iowa on Saturday, as they wrestle twice as they aim for a 13th place finish. Marian will take on Graceland at 9:00 a.m. central time, and will then wrestle either William Penn or Oklahoma City in the 13th or 15th place match.
