Knights Win Home Opener Over St. Francis (Ill.) 78-71

Indianapolis, Ind.- The Marian men's basketball team claimed their first home victory of the season with a 78-71 victory over St. Francis (Ill.) on Sunday afternoon. The Knights are now 2-0 overall on the season. 

Gus Etchison started off the game with a quick layup off of the opening jump to claim the early lead. The Fighting Saints quickly answered with a layup to bring the game to a tie. Both teams traded points in the beginning minutes of the half. Aiden Franks' three-pointer and Etchison's free throws highlighted the Knights scoring. The visitors answered with a pair of free throws to claim their first lead of the game with a score of 8-7 going into the first media timeout. Dylan Moles answered two minutes later with a jump shot followed by a three pointer to claim the lead once again. Noah Lovan got his hand in the mix claiming a layup and a free throw to bring the game to a stand still once more. St. Francis showed no signs of backing down with a layup to bring the score 17-15 at the 10 minute mark in the first half.

Lovan and Elhadj Diallo's three pointers helped the Knights claim the lead once again in the back end of the first half. Lovan and Luke Carroll's layups helped the Knights extend their 27-22 lead going into a media timeout. Diallo was on fire claiming a pair of threes and a pair of layups to set his new career high for points per game with 13. Diallo's previous record was 12 points during the East-West game last season. Moles ended the first half with a good jump shot off of a pass by Lovan to end the half 41-36.

The visitors opened up the second half with a layup followed by a three pointer to bring the game to a bottle neck once more. Jackson Ames fired back benefiting off of a steal from Diallo to throw up a jumper in the paint to break the tie once more. The Fighting Saints had no signs of giving up the fight with a pair of free throws followed by a layup to take the lead from the Knights. Both sides of the court fought hard in the early parts of the half with Etchison, Josiah Gustin, and Franks claiming crucial points for the team to bring the score 51-50 in favor of Marian at the 10 minute mark of play.

Etchison and Moles fought hard with Gus shooting a layup followed by a jumper, and Dylan having a pair of free throws to once again claim the five point margin over the visitors. Etchison took advantage of a foul called on the visitors after his three to claim another free throw to extend the Knights lead 63-54 and claim the largest lead of the game. The Knights and Fighting Saints went back and forth once more, featuring; Moles, Gavin Foe and Etchison all claiming crucial baskets in the tail end of the game. Gustin claimed the last set of points in the game with a free throw at the eight second mark to secure the 78-71 win over St. Francis (Ill.).

Gus Etchison led the team in points with 21, while Elhadj Diallo set his new career points per game record with 15 points in the game. Noah Lovan led the team in assists with five while Hayden Nahra had three. Dylan Moles, Josiah Gustin, and Elhadj Diallo all had four rebounds. Noah Lovan, Gus Etchison, and Gavin Foe also each had a pair of rebounds in the match up. 

The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday evening on the road against Indiana Tech starting at 7:00 p.m.
