Knights Fall to No. 5 Bellevue in First Pool Play Matchup

Sioux City, Iowa - The Marian women's volleyball team opened up NAIA Pool Play this morning at the Tyson Events Center falling to No. 5 Bellevue 3-0. The Knights are now 24-9 on the season following the first match-up at the Final Site.

The Knights and Bruins started out the first set with an evenly balanced game drawing four ties with Nicole Wilkinson, Madison Brooks, and Mikayla Cristiansen all claiming kills as well as Wilkinson and Khori Dryden claiming a block. Bellevue then went on a 7-0 run to draw a Marian timeout. Brooks claimed a kill and assisted on a block with Sarah Bennett coming out of the timeout to bring the score 6-10 in favor of Bellevue. The Knights and Bruins continued to trade points on each side of the court with the Knights benefiting off of crucial errors by the opponents and a kill from Brooks, but were outscored by Bellevue in the middle section of the set. Gabby Fish kicked off a 3-0 run for Marian with a kill before Bellvue answered with two consecutive points to draw Marian's second timeout. Brooks and Dryden came out of the timeout with back-to-back kills to bring the score 14-19. After the Bruins were able to score their 20th point Dryden and Christiansen answered with two more kills. Fish and Dryden continued to chip away at Bellevue's lead with two more kills to draw a Bruins timeout. The Knights answered with a 3-0 run with Fish claiming a block, Christiansen claiming a kill, and Emerson Evans claiming an ace off of her serve. Marian and Bellevue traded points with Dryden and Christiansen each claimed kills for the Knights but came up short to the Bruins ending set 1 with a score of 23-25. 

The Knights got off to an early lead going on a 4-0 run benefiting off of multiple attacking errors and a kill from Brooks. The Bruins answered with a 4-0 run as well bringing the score 7-7. Both sides traded points once more with Marian capitalizing off or two attacking errors and a kill from fish to bring the score 11-9. The Knights continued to extend their lead with Wilkinson and Christiansen claiming blocks and Dryden claiming a kill. Marian continued to benefit on attacking and service errors as well as three kills from Christiansen to bring the Knights up 20-21 of the set. Dryden claimed the last two kills for the second set but came up short once more with a final score of 22-25. 

The Bruins opened up the third set with two consecutive kills. Brooks followed with two kills. Bellevue continued to push with three consecutive 3-0 runs only to be broken up by a Brooks kill. Marian continued to chip away at the margin with kills from Bennett, Christiansen, and Fish but were answered with a 4-0 run by the Bruins bringing the score 9-14. Both sides went back and forth once more with the Knights claiming points from Bellevue's errors and a kill from Chrisitansen but came up short once again to a Bruins 3-0 run. Marian broke up the run benefiting off of an error to bring the score 13-19 but came up short with Bellevue going on a 6-0 run to end the set 13-25 and claim the 3-0 score in the match.

Mikayla Christiansen led the team in kills with 10 while Madison Brooks had nine and Khori Dryden had eight. Nicole Wilkinson led the team in blocks with four while Brooks had three. Logan Smith led the team in both assists with 14 and digs with 11. Emma Lyons claimed 11 assists and 10 digs throughout the match. Emerson Evans claimed nine assists and a pair of serving aces.

The Knights are back in action for their second pool play match-up tomorrow against No. 12 Providence starting at 11 AM ET in hopes of pushing their fate to a tiebreaker in Pool E.
