Goshen, Ind. - The Marian men's basketball team continued their winning streak on Wednesday night in northern Indiana, as the Knights dismantled Goshen College by a final score of 90-55. The win is Marian's third straight on the season and 16th consecutive over Goshen, as Marian improves to 17-6 overall and 7-6 in the Crossroads League.
The Knights wasted little time getting on the board in their win, as
Gus Etchison scored a pair from the foul line on the first Marian possession of the game, helping open the wire-to-wire game with a 4-0 run. A three-point make from Etchison and inside scores from
Jackson Ames and
Brody Whitaker kept the guest column on the scoreboard rising, and a make from
Nolan Foster before the under-15 media timeout captured a 13-4 lead. Etchison started to heat up after the timeout and shot his scoring totals to double-figures with five more points from inside and out, pushing Marian's lead to 23-6 nine minutes into play.
Etchison's early scoring gave him 10 quick points, and allowed him and
Maximus Gizzi to turn into distributors, as the pair dished assists on open three-pointers to
Josh Bryan and Whitaker to push the lead to 20 points. Marian led 34-12 after the three-point make by Whitaker with 6:18 to play in the opening half, as the junior's scoring and strong defensive play helped Marian push the lead to 27 points with a 13-0 run. Marian's 27-point advantage was first captured by
Dylan Moles with 4:41 to play in the half, and would be retained twice more before the half's end as Marian entered the break on top 45-21.
Goshen could do little to stop Marian as the game resumed action in the second half, with Marian opening the period on a 10-0 run that featured a pair of
Jackson Ames scores.
Gavin Foe continued to hold the lead over 30-points as he began to get involved on the offensive end, and a three-point make by Etchison with 14:19 to play ignited an 8-0 run that soared the difference on the board to 42 points.
Marian led 68-26 with 12:44 to play in the game after Etchison's run starting trifecta, and would push their lead to 44 points before calling off the assault, as
Rowen Farrell would shoulder the majority of the offense in the final 10 minutes of the game. Baskets from
Maximus Gizzi on top of Farrell's offense in the waning minutes carried the scoring ledger to 90 points, as Marian confidently ended the game on top 90-55.
Each of the five starters for Marian ended the game in double figures, led by
Gus Etchison's game-high 21 points. Etchison flirted with a triple-double in the contest, adding six rebounds and a team-high seven assists to his stat line.
Brody Whitaker finished with 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and
Maximus Gizzi scored 13 points. Both
Jackson Ames and
Gavin Foe scored 10 points each, and
Rowen Farrell led the bench with eight points in as many minutes.
As a team the Knights forced 16 Goshen turnovers and limited the Maple Leafs to 33 percent from the field, while finishing the game shooting 55 percent from the floor.
The Knights will have a quick turn around as they host Huntington on Friday, with the stand-alone game tipping at 3:00 p.m.
