Goshen, Ind. - The Marian softball team finished off their weekend with a full sweep over the Goshen Maple Leafs on the road, as the Knights won game one with a score of 11-1 and won game two with a score of 7-6. The Knights are now 31-7 overall and 19-5 in the conference.
Game 1 | Marian 11-1 Goshen | 5 Innings
The Knights got the bats rolling early in game one with Abby Hofmann doubling into left field to allow for
Sierra Norman and Abbey Madere to score the first two runs of the game.
Lily Wendt followed up with a three-run home run deep into left field to allow for Hofmann and
Grace Meyer to score as well claiming the 5-0 lead for the visitors.
After three quick outs for the Maple Leafs, Madere hit a sacrifice fly into left field to allow Norman to score another run for the Knights to increase the lead 6-0. Similarly to the double header prior the Knights and Maple Leafs traded three scoreless innings to bring up the Knights offense in the top of the fourth. Marian tallied two home runs in the inning to increase their lead 11-0. Norman hit the first home run of the inning into right center field to allow Madere to score aswell.
Hayley Greene tallied the second home run, hitting it deep down the left field line to allow Wendt and Hofmann to score.Â
In hopes of rallying the team the Maple Leafs had a back-to-back double and triple down the right field line to allow for the soul run to be scored for Goshen. The Knights got out of the inning without giving up any more runs with a foul out in left field, a looking strikeout, and a pop up to second to claim the 11-1 victory in game one.
Meyer and Hofmann lead the team in game one both going 3-3 at the plate, with Madere going 2-2 from the plate and Norman going 1-1. Greene and Wendt lead the team in RBI's with three each with Hoffman and Norman not far behind with two each.
Olivia Stunkel took the win with five strikeouts and only one hit given up.
Katie Lackman came in to close out the game giving up two hits and striking out one batter.
Game 2 | Marian 7-6 Goshen
After a scoreless inning from the Knights in game two the Maple Leafs claimed their first lead of the weekend with a consecutive single and three-run home run to bring the score 4-0 in favor of the home team.Â
The Knights quickly answered back with
Anna Pritchett grounding out to third base to allow Abby Hofmann to score the Knights first run of the game. Shortly after,
Savannah Harweger took advantage of a fielding error by first base to allow
Caroline Roop to score another run for Marian to bring the score 4-2 in favor of Goshen. The Maple Leafs continued to extend their lead with another home run to increase the score 5-2 at the end of the second inning.
After a scoreless third inning for both sides the Knights bounced back to decrease the home team's lead.
Brooke Knox doubled down the left field line to allow for Harweger and Pritchett to score two more runs for Marian. At the next at bat Madere doubled into left center to allow for Knox to score the tying run of the game. The Maple Leafs quickly took back their lead with a single into right field to bring the score 6-5 in favor of Goshen at the end of the fourth inning.
After two consecutive scoreless innings for both sides the Knights rallied in the top of the seventh inning with Madere singling into center field to allow for Harweger and Roop to score, bringing the lead into Marian's hands. With bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh the Maple Leafs struck out swinging to allow the Knights to claim the 7-6 win and the weekend sweep.
Knox and Madere lead the team in hits with three each, with Pritchett claiming two and Harweger, Hofmann, Roop, and
Mackenzie Dalton all claiming one each. Madere led the team in RBI's with three with Knox not far behind with two and Pritchett claiming one.
Lauren Mayer started the game pitching half an inning with
Macy Coan coming in as relief pitching the rest of the game taking the win and striking out three batters.
The Knights will be back in action Tuesday, April 16th on the road at Bethel with first pitch set for 3:00 pm.
