Knights Sweep Home Run Derby from Taylor

Upland, Ind. - The Marian softball team swept the Taylor Trojans, Monday evening in a home run derby claiming six home runs on the day. The Knights won game one 16-7 and won game two 12-7. Marian is now 37-9 overall and 25-7 in the Crossroads League.

Game 1 | Marian 16-7 Taylor
The Knights got the bats rolling early in game one with Brooke Knox doubling to allow Harweger to score the first run of the game. Shortly after Sierra Norman singled through the left side to allow Knox to increase Marian's lead. Abbey Hofmann extended the lead with a three-run home run into center field to allow for Grace Meyer and Norman to also cross home plate and extend the lead to five runs. The visitors were not done with their rally with Savannah Harweger ending the inning with a double into center field to allow Anna Pritchett and Hayley Greene to score two more runs and allow the Knights to take the 7-0 lead.

After a scoreless inning for the Trojans with back-to-back strikeouts and a pop up the Knights were up to bat once again. Abby Madere opened up the inning with a solo home run into right center to continue to increase the lead. Lily Wendt took advantage of an error by third base to reach first and allow Norman to cross the plate once again. Greene then hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to allow Hofmann to score another run to increase the Knights lead to 10-0 going into the bottom of the second inning.

After another scoreless inning for Taylor the Knights got the bats rolling with back-to-back home runs from Norman and Meyer. Norman hit a two-run homer into left center to allow Madere to cross the plate aswell. Soon after Meyer hit a solo bomb past left field to increase the lead 13-0.

Taylor was able to get on the board in the bottom of the third with a single into center field to score their first runner of the game and bring the score 13-1. The Trojans were able to get their bats rolling in the next inning after a scoreless inning for the Knights. With two bases on, the home team hit a home run past right field to decrease the Knights lead down to nine. They continued to push at the lead with a back-to-back single and a two-run home run to bring the score 13-7 going into the top of the fifth.

After two scoreless innings for each side the Knights were able to extend their lead in the top of the seventh inning. Norman was able to hit her second home run of the game deep past center field to allow for Madere and Mackenzie Dalton to score aswell bringing the score 16-7. 

The Knights were able to secure the 16-7 win in game one with a fly out to left field, foul out to first base, and a fly out to center field by the Trojans. 

Norman led the team in hits and RBI's going 4-4 at the plate and claiming six RBI's. Madere claimed three hits and one RBI, while Harweger claimed two hits and two RBI's. Meyer claimed two hits and one RBI, and Hofmann claimed two hits and three RBI's. Knox, Greene, Pritchett, and Jenna Minnix all claimed one hit each to add to the 17 hits tallied by the Knights. Knox and Greene also claimed one RBI each. Olivia Stunkel took home the win with five strikeouts on the day. Abigail McPerson claimed some time in the circle giving up one hit for the day. 

Game 2 | Marian 12-7 Taylor
Similar to game one the Knights claimed the early lead in game two with Abby Madere singling up the middle to allow Savannah Harweger to put Marian on the board. Taylor pushed at the Knights lead with a single to the pitcher to allow for the tying run to be scored to bring the game 1-1 going into the second inning. 

After a scoreless inning for both sides the Knights took back the lead with Caroline Roop singling into right field to allow Grace Meyer and Sierra Norman to score two more runs for the Knights bringing the score 3-1 going into the bottom of the third.

After another dry inning for both sides the Kights extended their lead once again with Harweger doubling into right center to allow Pritchett, Roop, and Meyer to score three more runs for the Knights extending their lead 6-1. The Trojans rallied in the bottom of the fifth with a double into left center to allow three runs to be scored. Tannehill from Taylor hit a sacrifice fly out to center field to allow another run to be scored. Shortly after with no outs the home team hit a double into left field to claim two more runs and take the 7-6 lead. 

The Knights fired back with Madere on first base, Norman hit her third home run of the day into center field to claim two more runs for the Knights. Meyer took advantage of a wild pitch to score another run for Marian. Shortly after Harweger singled up the middle to allow Pritchett and Hofmann to score, claiming the 11-7 lead for the visitors.

After a scoreless inning for the Trojans, Hayley Greene stepped up to the plate, singling down the middle to allow Jenna Minnix to score another run for the Knights and extend their lead 12-7. The Trojans attempted to rally with one out on the board with bases loaded, but the Knights were able to get out of it with a pop up to shortstop and a fielder's choice getting the runner out at second to allow the Knights to claim the 12-7 win and the sweep of the double header.

Pritchett led the team going 3-3 from the plate, with Harweger and Norman also tallying three hits each in game two. Madere, Meyer, and Hofmann claimed two hits each, while Knox, Greene, and Roop all claimed one in the 18 hits garnered. Norman led the team in RBI's with five out of the 11 the Knights tallied. Katie Lackman claimed her first win of the season striking out two batters and only giving up three hits. Macy Coan started in the circle and tallied two strikeouts for game two.

The Knights will be back in action tomorrow on the road against Mount Vernon with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
