INDIANAPOLIS - After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, the Marian men's soccer team out-scored Judson by a 2-1 mark in the second half to earn a 2-2 draw in their season opening match Wednesday afternoon.
The Knights earned the first shot of the afternoon in the seventh minute with a
Josh Wesseling attempt after a corner kick, but the early set piece was well defended by Judson. The Eagles would rally back and strike in the ninth minute, as a ricochet from a corner kick found the boot of Samuel Chavez, who scored the opening goal of the game. Marian's offense struggled to counter any positive looks, as a shot from
Cameron O'Brien in the 14th minute would be one of just two total attempts in the opening 25 minutes of play.
Saves from keeper
Juan Torres kept Marian in the game as he denied a pair of Judson strikes, helping keep the contest a 1-0 affair. Marian would take one shot on goal in the first half, coming from
Yoshiaki Takeishi in the 42nd minute, but the attempt was saved by keeper Ivan Dominguez.
Looking to strike early after trailing 1-0 at the half, Marian pressed early in the half and found an equalizing opportunity in the 57th minute. After seeing Judson take a pair of shots in the first seven minutes of the half, Wesseling made an aggressive play on the keeper Dominguez, stealing the ball from Judson as the keeper drifted toward the edge of the box. The senior drove the net after possessing the ball, and tapped in an easy goal for his first score of the year, leveling the match 1-1.
The score would stay an even 1-1 draw until the final 10 minutes of play, with both Torres and Dominguez making saves to preserve the score. Marian had multiple chances from
Kyle Alb throughout the second half, but the defender's header shots would miss high of the bar each time. In the 81st minute the standstill was broken, as the Eagles knocked a second ball of the match past Torres, taking a 2-1 lead.
In the 88th minute, the Knights would once again bring the score even, pressing the goal with three shot attempts before finding an equalizer off the foot of
Foslyn Grant. Grant's first goal as a Knight leveled the match 2-2, which stood as the final score despite a pair of shot attempts from Marian in the final two minutes of the match.
Judson ended the match with a 15-13 lead in shot attempts, while both Torres and Dominguez made five saves in the draw. Grant led Marian in attempts with three and two on target, while Wesseling, Alb, and O'Brien each had two attempts in the game.
Marian will seek victory this coming Saturday as they travel to Lawrence Tech for a 4:00 p.m. match against the Blue Devils.
