INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian women's soccer team rebounded from their draw on Saturday with a strong 5-0 shutout performance on Tuesday night against the University of Saint Francis (Ill.). The rebound win off the scoreless draw pushes Marian to a 5-1-1 record on the season.
Marian dominated possession from the opening kick, attacking the Saint Francis net early and often.
Katie Koger took the game's opening shot, and led to an attack near the net with four
Kiley Jones corner kicks and another pair of shots in the first eight minutes. Koger and
Marian Corro Celma took the first shots on goal of the night in the ninth minute but to no avail, as the Saints net-minder Krystal Rodriguez made a pair of strong saves.
The strong attack on the net finally paid off in the 18th minute of the match, as
Naomi Walters collected a pass from
Erin Kelly, and made a pair of moves before striking the net for the game's first goal. After another series of shots, Marian put away their second goal of the night with Koger finding
Layla Brown, who put in her sixth goal of the season in the 32nd minute to put her team on top 2-0. The score would hold entering halftime, with Marian adding to their shot total before the break.
After a reset and halftime adjustments, Marian pieced together a strong 45 minutes as they scored three goals. Three minutes into the second half,
Gretchen Mallin scored from distance on a pass from
Katie Koger, increasing the team's lead to three. Like the first half, possession was dominated by Marian, with the Saints setting up their first set piece of the game in the 57th minute.Â
Marian was able to rotate their lineup throughout the second half, limiting the Saints to three shot attempts as their defensive line controlled the touches. In the 67th minute, Marian tacked on their fourth goal of the night in the form of Koger, who slashed the net off a
Layla Brown pass to make the score 4-0. Koger would assist on the final goal of the night, finding
Kaitlyn Lavezzi in the 81st minute as the sophomore headed down the fifth goal of the night.Â
The 5-0 score held as the final mark on the scoreboard, as the Knights recorded fifth shutout of the season and fourth consecutive clean sheet. Marian held a 21-3 advantage in shot attempts, with an 11-0 edge in shots on goal.
Lily Ames moved to 3-0-1 on the year in goal with the win, marking her third shutout win. Koger led the team in points with five in the match, scoring once while adding three assists. Walters, Brown, Lavezzi, and Mallin each scored once, with
Erin Kelly and Brown each recording one assist each.
The Knights will return action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Cumberland University at 12:00 p.m.
