INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian wrestling team ended their first week of dual match competition undefeated, as the Knights earned a 33-17 win over No. 21 Lourdes University on Sunday afternoon. Marian is now 3-0 on the season, beginning the WHAC slate unblemished.
Marian was the recipient of four wins by forfeit on Sunday, earning 24 free points from the Gray Wolves vacating the 125, 133, 157, and 165 weight classes.
Preston Haines,
Landon Bertsch, Jeff Dunasky Jr, and
Braden Getz all received the wins by forfeit in their respective classes, with Bertsch, Dunasky, and Getz moving to 3-0 on the WHAC season with their automatic wins.
On the mat,
Dylan McKelvey fell in the first match of the day, suffering a defeat by fall against Nick Rodriguez (ranked No. 21 in the 133 weight class) in a time of 2:03.
Marlin Williams jumped Marian back into the win column with what proved to tbe the winning points, defeating Dru Wilson by fall in 4:22 at the 149 weight class. Dunasky and Getz's forfeits added to the team score after Williams win putting the home team in front 30-6.Â
The highlight match of the day came in the penultimate contest of the day, with No. 15
Clay Guenin wrestling No. 13 Carter Kroll. In the only ranked versus ranked battle of the day, Guenin came out on top by a decision victory, winning 8-2.Â
The remaining three matches went to Lourdes, as the Gray Wolves won at 174, 184, and 285. Ayden Wilson defeated Marian's
Evan Tilton at 174 by a 16-9 decision, No. 2 William Speight defeated
Liam Begley by a 19-3 tech fall at 184, and at 285
Michael Yerian lost a tight decision in an 8-5 battle in the 285 weight class.
Marian will look to keep their winning ways going on Saturday, as the Knights go on the road to compete at the annual Spartan Mat Classic, hosted by Manchester.Â
