No. 5 Marian Defeats (RV) Pikeville in Season Opener

Indianapolis, Ind.- The Marian women's basketball team opens up the 2025–26 campaign with a win over (RV) Pikeville. 

The first quarter opened up pretty evenly matched on each side, with the Bears scoring the first basket of the game. The Knights amped up the gears, going on a three-basket run with Madisyn Bailey, Abbey McNally, and Kenna Kirby each recording a basket to take the 9-5 lead. Pikeville was able to record a free-throw before Marian fired back with three more baskets from McNally, Olivia Faust, and Taylor Double. The Bears were able to record two more baskets, ending the quarter 17-9 in favor of the Knights.

Each team opened up the second half with a layup, with Kennedy Coleman recording the basket for Marian. Each team traded baskets back-and-forth for five possessions before the Knights were able to go on a four-basket rally highlighted by both Kiley and Abbey McNally and Madisyn Bailey, to increase the lead 35-22. Both teams recorded two more baskets before the end of the quarter, with Violet Shuluga and Abbey McNally recording the baskets for Marian, ending the half with a 39-26 lead. 

The Knights exploded in the third quarter with a 10-basket run to increase the lead 60–26. The Bears were able to score for the first time in the third quarter off a foul by the Knights, but Zoe Wheeler and Kennedy Coleman were able to push back, each recording baskets to increase the lead once more. The Bears recorded a trio of layups, but Aubrey Frank and Wheeler were able to counteract each with a three-pointer. Pikeville was able to benefit from a Knights foul, recording a trio of free throws, ending the quarter 70-37 in favor of Marian.

Pikeville opened up the fourth quarter with a jumper, but Marian counteracted quickly with five baskets to increase their lead to 40. The Bears recorded a jumper, but Emily Grim quickly counteracted the blow with a pair of three-pointers. Each team recorded a lab with Eva Fisher recording the basket for Marian and Kennedy Coleman, following up with a pair of free throws. Pikeville recorded the final basket of the game with a layup, securing the 89-45 win for Marian.

Kiley McNally led the team in points with 18 and rebounds with five. Madisyn Bailey recorded 11 points, and Zoe Wheeler recorded 10. Bailey led the team in assists with six.

Marian will be back in action on Friday, November 7th, as they travel up to Oak Lawn, Ill. To compete in the Catholic classic against Saint Xavier at 7 PM.
