Marian Falls to IU-Southeast Saturday Evening

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Marian men's basketball team fell to IU-Southeast on Saturday evening. The Knights moved to 0-5 in the early season. 

Marian opened up the game, benefiting from a pregame technical foul on the Grenadiers to take the early one-basket lead. After the tip, both teams traded baskets with Blake Russell recording a layup for the Knights. IU-Southeast continued to control the opening minutes of the game with a layup to counter Russell's basket. Ron Rutland III got his hand in the mix with a three-pointer, but the Grenadiers fired off a three-pointer to counteract. Dylan Moles fired off a layup, but IU-Southeast was fast to fight back with a pair of baskets to increase their lead to 12-8. Moles continued to push at the Grenadiers' lead with a three-pointer, but the visitors were quick to follow up with a layup, extending their lead to three. Aaron Humphry Jr. benefited from a foul to record two free throws and bring the game within one. IU-Southeast fired off a trio of baskets to extend its lead to 18-13. 

The Knights pushed back with a free-throw from Luke Carroll and a three-pointer from Elhadj Diallo to bring the deficit down to one once more. Each team continued to go back and forth with Rutland III and Humphrey Jr., each recording a pair of baskets before the Grenadiers pushed forward, extending their lead 35-24. Marian pushed back with a jumper from Moles, but IU-Southeast fired off a layup to counter. Rutland III ended the half with a free-throw to bring the score 37-27 in favor of IU-Southeast. 

Marian opened up the second half with a three-pointer from Joshua Renfro. The Grenadiers fired off a jumper, but Moles and Humphry Jr. were quick to fire off a three-pointer and a pair of free throws, bringing the margin down to four. IU-Southeast fired off a three-pointer and layup with Rutland III firing off a free-throw to break up the run, bringing the score 44-36. Each side traded baskets with Rutland III recording the basket for the Knights. Marian continued to push at the Grenadiers' lead with a layup from Aidan Franks, followed by a three-pointer by Humphrey Jr., taking IU-Southeast's lead down to six. The visitors fired off a pair of baskets, but Marian quickly followed up with a pair from Franks and Moles to bring the score to 52-46.

Each team fired off free throws and a jumper with Rutland II and Humphrey Jr. recording the baskets for Marian, bringing the score bringing the margin within seven. IU-Southeast continued to extend its lead with a layup, but Marian was able to quickly counter with a pair of free throws from Humphrey Jr., bringing the score to 58-53. Each team traded a pair of baskets once more, with the Grenadiers recording a pair of three-pointers and Marian recording a pair of free throws and a layup from Humphrey Jr. to bring the score within seven. IU-Southeast rattled off a layup, but Marian was able to benefit from a foul and a technical foul, recording three free throws, bringing the score 66-60. The visitors continued to push with a pair of layups. Rutland III was able to fire off a layup in return, but the Grenadiers were able to follow up with a pair of free throws to extend their lead 72-62. The Knights fired off a trio of baskets to end the half with Rutland III, Carroll, and Moles recording the baskets for Marian. IU-Southeast closed out the game with a pair of free throws, ending the game 76-70. 

Aaron Humphrey Jr. led the team, recording another double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Ron Rutland III and Dylan Moles weren't far behind, each recording 17 points. Rutland III, Moles, and Aidan Franks each led the team in assists with two apiece. 

Marian will be back in action on Wednesday, November 16th, as they travel up to Bethel to open up Crossroads League Play at 7 PM.
