Huntington, Ind. - Looking to snap a two-match losing skid against the Huntington Foresters, the Marian volleyball team turned in a sharp four-set victory on Saturday night, upsetting the Foresters in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals. The win in the CL Tournament improves Marian's record to 18-10 on the season.
Marian got off to a quick start on Saturday night, winning set one 25-14 as the team logged a .367 hitting percentage. The Knights scored their points in bunches, dropping a five-point run to win the race to 10 points, while an
Evie Dart solo block provided an early 13-5 lead. Another three-point swing that featured two blocks from
Nicole Wilkinson and
Avery Toole put Marian in front by double figures, sealing their grip on the game. Dart gave Marian the 1-0 match lead, ending the first set with a kill.
Huntington responded in set two, winning the game 25-19. Marian dropped their hitting in set two, as the offense recorded a -.150 attack percentage, while recording 12 errors. Three Forester blocks of Marian attacks helped the home team to a victory in the game, while an 11-0 run would give them total control of the set. The run started while trailing the Knights 8-6, and ended with the game flipped in a 17-8 count.
The Foresters kept their surge going into the third set, building an early 6-3 lead as they aimed to win a decisive third set. Marian settled into the game, using a 4-0 run sparked by two
Evie Dart kills to get in gear. The game would teeter back and forth after Marian took the 8-7 lead, changing sides as the set eventually progressed to a 15-15 stalemate. As the set pushed to a 16-16 draw,
Chloe Cook gave the Knights an edge, scoring consecutive kills to grab an 18-16 lead. The Knights stretched their lead into the 20s, but would see their hold slip as Huntington scored successive points to reclaim a 22-21 advantage. Trailing by one,
Mya Cunningham and
Emma Lyons turned to
Khori Dryden, as the junior outside hitter logged four unanswered kills, pushing the Knights to a 25-22 victory.
Riding the set three win, Marian left no doubt in the fourth set, opening on a 6-1 run en route to their 25-14 victory.
Avery Toole and
Chloe Cook were catalysts of the strong start, while Wilkinson, Dart, and Dryden were equally involved in the attack that pushed the game to a 14-5 score. Marian would go on to win the race to 20 points as they led 20-11, and finished strong, getting a 3-0 run to help dull the Foresters' blade and win the match in four sets.
Khori Dryden and
Sami Luttel each logged double-doubles in the victory, with Dryden recording a team-high 14 kills and 17 digs, while Luttel recorded 23 assists and 14 digs.
Mya Cunningham led the setters with 26 assists, and
Emma Lyons recorded 24 digs, pacing the Marian career digs record. Cook finished the match with 13 kills, and Wilkinson scored 10 kills.
Evie Dart had five kills and a career-high four total blocks.Â
