Knights Take Win at Home Over Saint Mary of the Woods

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Marian men's basketball team wrapped up 2025 with a 70-65 win over Saint Mary of the Woods on Friday night. With the win, the Knights move to 4-10 overall on the season. 

Saint Mary of the Woods struck first with a layup, but Marian was able to quickly counter with a trio of baskets from Aidan Franks, Josiah Gustin, and Ron Rutland III to take the early 6-2 lead. The Pomeroy's benefited from a foul to fire off three free throws, but the Knights were able to maintain their lead with another trio of baskets from Rutland III, Gustin, and Humphrey Jr., drawing a media timeout. Out of the media timeout, Saint Mary of the Woods chipped away at Marian's lead with a pair of baskets, bringing the score 12-11 in favor of Marian. Each team traded off a pair of layups, with Dylan Moles recording the basket for the Knights to maintain their lead.

The Knights went on a 13-point run with Blake Russell, Franks, and Luke Lindeman each recording baskets in the run to increase their lead to 26-13. With five and a half minutes remaining, the Pomeroy's pushed back with a three-pointer, but Joshua Renfro, Russell, and Franks were able to quickly counter, increasing the lead to 17. Each team traded off baskets with Franks tallying the points for Marian with a dunk. The visitors fired off the final basket, bringing the score 35-21 in favor of the Knights.

Franks opened the half with a layup before the visitors fired off a layup in defense. Gustin and Humphrey Jr. extended the Knights' lead to 18 with a pair of layups. The Pomeroy's continued to push at the lead with a trio of baskets, bringing the score 41-30 and drawing a media timeout. Saint Mary of the Woods continued their stretch with a pair of baskets, but Moles was able to end the run with a jumper to maintain the 43-34 lead.

Each side traded off free throws with Rutland III recording the baskets for the Knights. Saint Mary of the Woods fired off a layup, but Gustin was quick to counter with a pair of free throws to maintain the nine-point lead. The visitors continued to push at Marian's lead with a pair of layups but Moles was able to decrease the blow with a jumper, bringing the score 49-42 with under eight minutes remaining. The Knights benefited from a pair of fouls, with Franks knocking down a free throw and Gustin firing off two. Each team fired off a pair of baskets with Franks and Humphrey Jr. recording the baskets for Marian, maintaining the 10-point lead. Saint Mary of the Woods fired off a pair of free throws, but Humphrey Jr. countered with two and a jumper. The Pomeroy's fired off a layup, but Moles fired back with a pair of free throws to bring the score 62-50. The visitors continued to make their final push with a pair of baskets, but Marian was able to benefit from a pair of fouls with Franks firing off a trio of free throws. Each team traded free throws in the final minute, with Rutland III and Moles tallying the baskets. Saint Mary of the Woods closed out the game with a three-pointer, bringing the score 70-65 in favor of Marian. 

Aidan Franks led the way with 17 points and four assists, while Ron Rutland III, Josiah Gustin, and Aaron Humphrey Jr. all recorded 10 points. Gustin led the way in rebounds with eight, while both Humphrey Jr. and Luke Carroll recorded seven each. 

The Knights will be back in action after the holidays as they travel to Upland, Ind., to take on Taylor University at 3 pm on January 3rd.
