INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian women's lacrosse team saw their two-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon, as the Knights were topped by No. 3 Cumberlands 15-7. The Knights are now 2-3 overall on the season.
The Knights won the opening quarter of the Sunday's contest, out-scoring the Patriots 3-1 in the period. Cumberlands struck first, but Marian rebounded with a power-play goal from
Delaney Koles to ignite their offense. Koles struck twice before the quarter ended, as
Ruby Mason and
Lizzie Piercy assisted on the goals with the sophomore registering a hat trick after the first 15 minutes.
In the second quarter, the University of the Cumberlands responded by backing their national ranking, scoring three quick goals within the first 90 seconds of the quarter to take the lead.
Ella Grace Giedd snapped the scoring streak as she leveled the contest with an unassisted goal at the 11:32 mark, however the goal would be a short-lived spark as the Patriots took over. A goal from Marisa Helsten with 7:30 to play in the first half sparked a 6-0 run, as Cumberlands entered the half leading 10-4 following their run.
The Patriots would continue to out-play the Knights over the final 30 minutes of the game, as they out-scored Marian 5-3 in the second half. Marian limited the Patriots scores in the third quarter as they allowed just two goals, but in the fourth quarter the guests struck three times unanswered to open the period. The Knights would close the game with a pair of goals in the final 2:07 to play, denting their deficit as they fell 15-7.
Koles scored three goals in the defeat, while Giedd had two goals on the day. Piercy and Mason each had three points in the loss.
Marian returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Life University.Â
