Mount Vernon, Ohio - The Marian softball team earned a regular season sweep over Mount Vernon with a 2-1 victory in game one and a BLANK-BLANK victory in game two. The Knights are now 29-5 on the season and 19-3 in the Crossroads League.
Game 1 | Marian 2-1 Mt. Vernon
Both teams held the game to a shutout through the first two innings before Marian struck in the top of the third. After two singles in a row and a walk Jenna Minnix was up at the plate and drew a walk to bring Abbey Hofmann to home plate and get on the board 1-0.
After three straight outs for the Cougars, Marian was able to strike once more in the top of the fourth inning. Brooke Knox singled to center field to get on base. Madere followed up with a double right back to center field to score Knox and increase the lead 2-0.
After a trio of shutout innings for each team the Cougars were able to strike in the bottom of the seventh with a single while having two runners on base to bring the score 2-1. The Knights were able to take the 2-1 win catching the runner at first base trying to steal second. Â
Abbey Hofmann led the team in game one going 2-4 from the plate recording one run and one RBI. Grace Meyer went 1-1 from the plate and let the Knights in walks with two. Brooke Knox went 1-3 from the plate with one run scored. In the circle, Olivia Stunkel earned her 16th win of the season pitching the complete game. Stunkel struck out 10 batters while only giving up four hits.
Game 2 | Marian 9-1 Mt. Vernon | 6 Innings
Much like the first game each team held their competitor to a shutout through four innings. Hayley Green started things off with a two-run home run to score herself and Lily Wendt on the play and take the early lead. Ally Malone was the next to record points with taking advantage of a fielder's choice and crossing the plate on an error by the shortstop. Abbey Hofmann was the last to strike in the inning hitting a single to score Emily Phillips and Caroline Roop and bring the score 5-0 at the end of the fourth inning.Â
After holding Mount Vernon scoreless through the fourth inning Marian was able to strike again. Malone kicked things off with a single into right field to score Grace Meyer. Roop followed up with a single to score Green and increase the lead 8-0.Â
The Cougars were able to strike in the bottom of the 5th with a single into center field to score the runner and decrease Marian's lead down to seven. The Knights were able to strike one more time to end the game with Wendt hitting her second double of the game to score Hofmann and secure the 9-1 win and regular season sweep.
Lily Wendt led the Knights in game two going 4-4 from the plate with two doubles, one run, and one RBI recorded. Abbey Hofmann, Hayley Greene, and Caroline Roop led the Knights in RBIs with two each. Hofmann went 2-4 from the plate with one run while Roop went 1-2 from the plate with one run. Greene hit the singular home run for the Knights going 1-3 from the plate with two runs scored. In the circle, Macy Coan pitched all six innings only giving up five hits and struck out four batters.
Marian starts their week at Huntington to wrap up their series on the road with game one starting at 3 PM.
